Book Description
In her fascinating poem cycle, Gloria Mindock jolts back into memory the roots of El Salvador's present day violence. Mindock coaxes to the page the voices of the dead who lie, less in peace, than in restless obsession with the atrocities they suffered. She brings forth as well the voices of the living who seem startled to find that they died somewhere between the horrors they witnessed and the grave they have yet to lie down in. Blood Soaked Dresses is a beautiful, harrowing first book. - Catherine Sasanov

Beyond the Bridge
Author: Greg Hahn
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1543407536
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 620
Book Description
In this thriller, the reader follows the fortunes of Australian ASIO agent Kate Austin. We find Kate has already led allied intelligence agencies to discover a well-established listening post to the key US intelligence gathering facility of Pine Gap in Central Australia. Australian authorities have in custody the head of a massive global electronics giant, Kronberg, the supplier of much of the computer equipment to governments around the world. The man in custody is Joseph Homberg. Austin has also uncovered half a century of archives, the records of two assassins that have been employed by Homberg and his family. These diaries are the key to understanding the current series of violent events. The diaries suggest European old money is at the heart of generational political corruption and a complete breakdown of global cyber security. Austins search for the hidden hand behind it all entwines with real events related to the birth of computing and the internet itself. In Beyond the Bridge, Kate pushes ahead but is caught in the kickback by the corrupt as she unravels a conspiracy that rivals no other. The story overlaps and follows on from the first novel of the three-part series The Bridge at Koondrook.

Fashioning Horror
Author: Julia Petrov
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 135003620X
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 251
Book Description
From Jack the Ripper to Frankenstein, Halloween customs to Alexander McQueen collections, Fashioning Horror examines how terror is fashioned visually, symbolically, and materially through fashion and costume, in literature, film, and real life. With a series of case studies that range from sensationalist cinema and Slasher films to true crime and nineteenth-century literature, the volume investigates the central importance of clothing to the horror genre, and broadens our understanding of both material and popular culture. Arguing that dress is fundamental to our understanding of character and setting within horror, the chapters also reveal how the grotesque and horrific is at the center of fashion itself, with its potential for instability, disguise, and carnivalesque subversion. Packed with original research, and bringing together a range of international scholars, the book is the first to thoroughly examine the aesthetics of terror and the role of fashion in the construction of horror.

There Should Have Been Eight

Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 417
Book Description
In this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh, a remote estate in New Zealand’s Southern Alps hosts a reunion no one will ever forget. Seven friends. One last weekend. A mansion half in ruins. No room for lies. Someone is going to confess. Because there should have been eight. . . . They met when they were teenagers. Now they’re adults, and time has been kind to some and unkind to others—none more so than to Bea, the one they lost nine long years ago. They’ve gathered to reminisce at Bea’s family’s estate, a once-glorious mansion straight out of a gothic novel. Best friends, old flames, secret enemies, and new lovers are all under one roof. But when the weather turns and they’re snowed in at the edge of eternity, there’s nowhere left to hide from their shared history. As the walls close in, the pretense of normality gives way to long-buried grief, bitterness, and rage. Underneath it all, there’s the nagging feeling that Bea’s shocking death wasn’t what it was claimed to be. And before the weekend is through, the truth will be unleashed—no matter the cost. . . .

Dark Little Women
Author: R. L. Wood
Publisher: R. L. Wood
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 146
Book Description
If you like genre benders and fractured tales, you'll love this reinvention of classic horror story villains, now presenting women as the main characters. Featuring Dorian Gray as housemother and Doctor Jekyll as the in house physician to a group of blood-thirsty young women in need of rehab. The goal? To conquer their innate urges and be free of their curse so they can live out the rest of their lives as mortals. This wicked tale has a fun menagerie of gothic characters including a vampire, werewolf, ghost, Frankenstein's monster and more. There is a little romance and a touch of humor making this story a well rounded, fun read that's sure to appeal to everyone. Reviewers testimony pulled from Amazon.com: -Girl Power! I enjoyed the fact that it was a play on old favorites, and women filled most roles. It was a fun read with a fast pace. The author did a good job with the storyline, and the ending surprised me! I’m looking forward to book 2. - Pure Class: So glad I read this book. In lesser hands, the reimagining of world famous characters would have been easy to follow hackneyed stereotypes but R.L Wood has managed to reinvent the likes of Dorian Gray, Dracula and Jeckyll and Hyde among others in a way that makes them believable in their own right. Coupled with a story of redemption, rescues and treachery that rattles along without sagging and I think you have a winner. - A Really Enjoyable Book: It's those kinds of books where you feel sad once it has ended. I loved the characters, especially Dr Jekyll and V, and I enjoyed the way the story was written. I would recommend this to everyone, whether you like dark fantasy fan or not. Can't wait for book 2 -Unique off-beat Horror story! I really enjoyed reading this story of Dorian and her renegade immortals trying to seek redemption whilst at the same time trying to keep to a deal she made with the devil. It's different and unique, and I loved the fact that all the traditional male characters are now female. I particularly enjoyed the vicious Hyde! The dynamic between the characters is interesting and cleverly done, with some off-beat funny moments thrown in too. I for one am looking forward to the next instalment!! -Classical horror stories get a new twist in these tales and women become the main characters. (I would love to know the inspiration.) I enjoyed the descriptions and clever titles and names. I hope the highly creative R.L. Wood will put this on audio–with a version using more dialogue. Looking forward to what this author writes next.

The Marlowe Papers
Author: Ros Barber
Publisher: Macmillan + ORM
ISBN: 1250026539
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 505
Book Description
Winner of the 2013 Desmond Elliott Prize Longlisted for the 2013 Women's Prize for Fiction You're the author of the greatest plays of all time. But nobody knows. And if it gets out, you're dead. On May 30, 1593, a celebrated young playwright was killed in a tavern brawl in London. That, at least, was the official version. Now Christopher Marlowe reveals the truth: that his "death" was an elaborate ruse to avoid a conviction of heresy; that he was spirited across the English Channel to live on in lonely exile; that he continued to write plays and poetry, hiding behind the name of a colorless man from Stratford—one William Shakespeare. With the grip of a thriller and the emotional force of a sonnet, this remarkable novel in verse gives voice to a man who was brilliant, passionate, and mercurial. A cobbler's son who counted nobles among his friends, a spy in the Queen's service, a fickle lover and a declared religious skeptic, Christopher Marlowe always courted trouble. In this memoir, love letter, confession, and settling of accounts, Ros Barber brings Christopher Marlowe and his era to vivid life in The Marlowe Papers.
