Habitats for Birds in Europe

Habitats for Birds in Europe PDF Author: Graham M. Tucker
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
The greatest threats to Europe's birds and biodiversity come from loss and degradation of habitat. This book brings together more than 190 bird and habitat conservation experts from all over Europe, to examine the threats to Europe's eight major habitat types, and propose policies and actions to protect and restore them. Although the emphasis is on birds, particularly the 40 percent of European species with an unfavourable conservation status, many recommendations would help conserve all elements of biodiversity in the wider European environment. "An important contribution to the conservation of biodiversity in Europe" - Peter L Nielsen, European Commission. "An extremely valuable reference for bird conservationists in any continent" - The Wilson Bulletin.

Birds of Passage

Birds of Passage PDF Author: Mark-Anthony Falzon
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1789207673
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Bird migration between Europe and Africa is a fraught journey, particularly in the Mediterranean, where migratory birds are shot and trapped in large numbers. In Malta, thousands of hunters share a shrinking countryside. They also rub shoulders with a strong bird-protection and conservation lobby. Drawing on years of ethnographic fieldwork, this book traces the complex interactions between hunters, birds and the landscapes they inhabit, as well as the dynamics and politics of bird conservation. Birds of Passage looks at the practice and meaning of hunting in a specific context, and raises broader questions about human-wildlife interactions and the uncertain outcomes of conservation.

Invasive Aquatic Species of Europe. Distribution, Impacts and Management

Invasive Aquatic Species of Europe. Distribution, Impacts and Management PDF Author: Erkki Leppäkoski

Book Description
The global scale of alien species invasions is becoming more and more evident in the beginning ofthe new millennium. Though the problem ofbiological invasions became a rapidly growing research area, there are large gaps still, both geographically and the matically, to be filled in the near future. This book is the first attempt to provide an overall picture of aquatic species invasions in Europe. Its geographical scope stretches from Irish waters in the west to Volga River and the Caspian Sea in the east, and from Mediterranean in the south up to the Arctic coast of Europe. Not all parts of the continent could be equally covered, as in some countries species invasions are not studied yet. The book tends to represent the array of all major European aquatic systems on the broadest geographical and ecological scope possible from fully saline seas, semi-enclosed brackish water bodies and coastallagoons to freshwater lakes, major river systems and waterways. The key objectives include the present status and impacts caused by non-native aquatic species in European waters. Please note that lengthy species lists submitted for publication and additional informa tion were put on the Internet, as the electronical version of these tables benefits from computer assisted search for data (http://www. ku. lt/nemo/EuroAquaInvaders. htm). Altogether more than 100 scientists from 24 countries have joined to synthesize the available information on bioinvasions. However, the book does not claim to be fully comprehensive.
