In recent years, the declines of wild and domestic pollinators gathered increasing attention. This dissertation tackles three important aspects of the economics of the honey bees as pollinators. It develops new economic and biological models that help analyze the demand and supply for pollination services and the problem of pollination externalities.Chapter 2 develops a model of honey bee foraging behavior that can be used to simulate crop yields as functions of honey bee densities. These yield functions help us understand the economic behavior of growers who rely on bees for pollination. One important simulation result for the case of almonds is that the production function facing growers is close to one of fixed proportion in pollination input. Accordingly, the modeling of the foraging behavior of bees provides an explanation for the observed lack of variation in pollinator use and shows how the behavior of bees and growers are connected.Chapter 3 models beekeepers who shift bees from crop to crop to follow successive blooms. On each crop, foraging bees jointly produce honey and provide pollination services. Accordingly, the supply of pollination facing growers of a given crop depends on both the price of honey and the demand for pollination services from other crops. Modeling the economic behavior of beekeepers, constrained by the population dynamics of bees, explain the seasonality observed in pollination markets. The model, which includes the growth of the population of bees, predicts that pollination fees for crops blooming early, such as almonds, are more sensitive to increases in winter losses of bees.Chapter 4 clarifies the differences between contractual relationships involving crop growers and beekeepers and the incentives problems generated by the movement of pollinators across farm boundaries. This chapter develops a conceptual model of pollination externalities that combine the joint production of honey and pollination services and the external effects created by the diffusion of pollinators across property lines. Better appreciation of where the key externalities occur and a better understanding of the problem of measurement costs is crucial to understanding the efficiency of institutions involved in the management of pollinators, both wild and managed.
