The Global Architecture of Multilateral Development Banks

The Global Architecture of Multilateral Development Banks PDF Author: Adrian Robert Bazbauers
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000361330
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
This book explores the evolution of the 30 functioning multilateral development banks (MDBs). MDBs have their roots in the growing system of international finance and multilateral cooperation, with the first recognisable MDB being proposed by Latin America in financial cooperation with the US in the late 1930s. That Inter-American Bank did not eventuate but was a precursor to the World Bank being negotiated at Bretton Woods in 1944. Since then, a complex network of regional, sub-regional, and specialised development banks has progressively emerged across the globe, including two significant recent entrants established by China and the BRICS. MDBs arrange loans, credits, and guarantees for investment in member states, generally with the stated aim of fostering economic growth. They operate in both the Global North and South, though there are more MDBs focusing on emerging and developing states. While the World Bank and some of the larger regional banks have been scrutinised, little attention has been paid to the smaller banks or the overall system. This book provides the first study of all 30 MDBs and it evaluates their interrelationships. It analyses the emergence of the MDBs in relation to geopolitics, development paradigms and debt. It includes sections on each of the banks as well as on how MDBs have approached the key sectors of infrastructure, human development, and climate. This book will be of particular interest to researchers of development finance, global governance, and international political economy.

Arab Regionalism

Arab Regionalism PDF Author: Silvia Ferabolli
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317658035
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
Arab regionalism details and examines the power relations involved in the making of an Arab region. On an empirical level, this book concentrates on the drawing of topographic and ideational boundaries in the Arab region, on Arab regional organizations, on the functional cooperation among Arab states and institutions, and on the socio-cultural infra-structure that supports the Arab region making process, with a strong focus on post-1990 dynamics. On a theoretical level, this work makes a case for the analytical autonomy of "Arab" regionalism (as opposed to regionalism in the Middle East or in the Mediterranean) and for the necessity of approaching it as an actual process instead of a failed project. The attitude of debasement and erasure towards Arab regionalism that is common-place in the field of regional studies is replaced in this book for the acknowledgment that there is much more political coordination, economic cooperation and social integration in the Arab region than has previously been assumed. Providing a fresh perspective on Arab regionalism, this book will be an essential resource for scholars and researchers with an interest in Regionalism, Middle Eastern Politics and International Relations.

The Composition and Distribution of Financial Assistance From Arab Countries and Arab Regional Institutions

The Composition and Distribution of Financial Assistance From Arab Countries and Arab Regional Institutions PDF Author: International Monetary Fund
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1451961448
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
This paper examines the volume and distribution of concessional and nonconcessional financial flows from Arab countries, and aid agencies, and regional institutions to developing countries. Arab financial assistance increased very rapidly from 1973 to 1980 in line with the rapid growth in oil revenues. Essentially because of the softer oil market, this trend was reversed in the 1980s. Nonetheless, the Arab contributions as a share of GNPs remain by far the most generous among the major donor groups. Arab recipient countries received nearly 62 percent of total Arab financial assistance. Together with large flows of workers’ remittances, this assistance accelerated their economic development beyond what would have been otherwise possible.

The Problems Of Arab Economic Development And Integration

The Problems Of Arab Economic Development And Integration PDF Author: Adda Guecioueur
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000305007
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 189

Book Description
In this book, scholars, journalists, and officials of Arab, pan-Arab, and non-Arab institutions afford insights into the problems of Arab economic development and integration. The contributors, who met on the occasion of the 11th Arab Summit (also known as the First Arab Economic Summit), demonstrate that Arab economic integration is the best means by which individual Arab countries can achieve economic development. Their study of the integration process, the obstacles encountered, and the results achieved, in addition to being of interest to anyone concerned with the Arab world, is of particular relevance to those studying economic development in the Third World and South-South or North-South relations.

Evolution of Bilateral Swap Lines

Evolution of Bilateral Swap Lines PDF Author: Michael Perks
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1513590138
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 40

Book Description
This paper makes contributions to the study of bilateral swap lines (BSLs). First, this paper fills a BSL information gap by constructing a comprehensive database of BSLs based on publicly available information, including after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, the paper provides the results of regression analysis exploring several empirical questions that were not covered in previous studies. The paper documents the evolution of BSLs into an important part of the Global Financial Safety Net (GFSN), with some helping to stabilize financial market during both the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and the COVID-19 pandemic. Analysis suggests that countries on the recipient side of BSLs are more likely to sign and renew BSLs designed to alleviate balance of payments needs as their external position weakens. U.S. Federal Reserve BSLs appear to have been effective at stabilizing financial market conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
