Book Description
Chemical treatment systems (CTS) are implemented in areas where traditional, physical erosion and sediment control practices will not meet water quality goals for construction site runoff. The purpose of CTS is to reduce the amount of suspended sediment which would be released using conventional erosion control systems. The primary mechanism is the introduction of chemical flocculants into runoff, resulting in a binding of the suspended clays and silts together into larger particles which settle more quickly or can be filtered from the stormwater. Flow control through CTS is of vital importance for the proper dosing of stormwater runoff. All normal hydrologic analyses must be done to insure that reasonable peak flows are accounted for along with typical flows from designed storm events. Once analysis is adequately addressed, then the project can deal with the complexities of design and dose rate requirements. The overall objectives of this book are twofold. First, it is designed to provide a technically credible basis for best management practices for the use of CTS for turbidity reduction on road construction projects. Secondly, it is designed to identify the most important variables to address when selecting chemical treatment best management practices for a particular site.

Urban Runoff Quality Management

Urban Runoff Quality Management PDF Author: Water Environment Federation
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9781572780392
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
This manual comprises a holistic view of urban runoff quality management. For the beginner, who has little previous exposure to urban runoff quality management, the manual covers the entire subject area from sources and effects of pollutants in urban runoff through the development of management plans and the design of controls. For the municipal stormwater management agency, guidance is given for developing a water quality management plan that takes into account receiving water use objectives, local climatology, regulation, financing and cost, and procedures for comparing various types of controls for suitability and cost effectiveness in a particular area. This guidance will also assist owners of large-scale urban development projects in cost-effectively and aesthetically integrating water quality control to the drainage plan. The manual is also directed to designers who desire a self-contained unit that discusses the design of specific quality controls for urban runoff.

Stormwater Discharge Management

Stormwater Discharge Management PDF Author: Frank R. Spellman
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 0865878161
Category : Best management practices (Pollution prevention)
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
This comprehensive resource provides engineers, managers, compliance specialists, construction professionals, and students with the tool they need to understand and comply with the requirements of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 40 Part 122 stormwater regulations. Stormwater Discharge Management covers the full spectrum of stormwater issues, including stormwater regulations, NPDES permitting, minimum control measures, activities-based discharges, overflows, stormwater monitoring, stormwater enforcement strategy, and the new Stormwater Phase II Rule, which mandated compliance March 10, 2003. Readers will learn who meets the criteria for compliance under this rule and how compliance can be achieved in construction activity, agricultural activity, and marine activity. To help simplify the process, the authors identify each and every compliance requirement, from examining the different types of stormwater discharge permits to writing an effective Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPP). They also include actual EPA field enforcement practices and best management practices to help readers ensure compliance success. Readers will gain a clearer appreciation for the stormwater regulations by reviewing the objectives of the Clean Water Act, the purpose and requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), and the types of discharges/facilities affected by the laws.
