Book Description
Excerpt from Beethoven a Biographical Romance Do not the ruins of Lowenberg greet you solemnly, telling you of the famous old race of the nobles of Heinsberg and their deeds, of William IV. and his cruel death, of the reformers Melancthon and Bucer, who for a long time found hospitality and protection behind these walls, then so firm and proud? And what a marvellous story of the beautiful Agnes of Mansfield, and the Elector Gebhard, do the breezes bring from over there. It is really worth the trouble to listen to all these mysterious whisperings which the seven old comrades up yonder entrust to the breezes, and which these garrulously bring over to the solemn Godesberg and it proud crown of walls. To Godesberg and its ruin a merry company was now on its way. It consisted of Frau Von Breuning, the widow of the Electoral Hofrath Von Breuning, with her two sons, Stephan and Christoph, and her daughter, Eleonore, an intimate friend of the latter, the lovely little Rosa, and the family friends, Ries, Wegeler, and Beethoven. That there should be mirth among this little company was a matter of course. Frau Von Breuning was herself cheerful, and still young, and knew how to live with these young people who surrounded her. Stephan was sixteen years of age, Christoph and Ludwig Van Beethoven, fifteen, and the two girls were just entering their fourteenth year. Only one older man, the worthy Chamber-Musician and Director of the Electoral Chapel, had, as usual, joined the merry circle. He was indeed counted almost a member of the Breuning family, whose comforter and adviser he had been since the death of the Hofrath. In the favorable seasons of the year, it was one of the chief pleasures of this family to take walks in the glorious surrounding country, for sensibility to the beauties of nature was natural to them, as, in fact, was receptivity for everything good and beautiful. These impulses proceeded from Frau Von Breuning. To her merry disposition she added strict moral principle and a well-rounded character, rare in a woman especially at that time, the last decade of the previous century, in which the corruption prevalent in almost all the German courts reacted so contagiously upon the masses. Languages : en
Pages : 390

Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Beethoven Most of these, with some exceptions, are too short to include details of the great composer's character and life apart from his vocation, one exception being the great and lengthy Life by the American, Alexander Thayer. This, written in English, was translated into German, and published in Germany, a volume at intervals. Three volumes were given to the world in this manner, the fourth being hoped for when Mr. Thayer unhappily died without leav ing more than the materials for the completion of the book. Pages : 218

Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Beethoven Music is the most popular of the arts. It fills man's breast with a melancholy joy. Even the brute creation is not insensible to its power. Yet, at its best, music is a haughty, exclusive being, and not without reason are training, practice, talent, and the development of that talent, required for the understanding of her secrets. One wishes to be heard with the intellect, by one's equals emotion becomes only women, but music should strike fire from the mind of a man. In some such strain as this, Beethoven himself once spoke, and we know how slowly the works of the great symphonist found a hearing and recognition from the general public. Beethoven's Eroica

Beethoven's Eroica PDF Author: James Hamilton-Paterson
Publisher: Basic Books
ISBN: 1541697545
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 143

Book Description
An ode to Beethoven's revolutionary masterpiece, his Third Symphony In 1805, the world of music was startled by an avant-garde and explosive new work. Intellectually and emotionally, Beethoven's Third Symphony, the "Eroica," rudely broke the mold of the Viennese Classical symphony and revealed a powerful new expressiveness, both personal and societal. Even the whiff of actual political revolution was woven into the work-it was originally inscribed to Napoleon Bonaparte, a dangerous hero for a composer dependent on conservative royal patronage. With the first two stunning chords of the "Eroica," classical music was transformed. In Beethoven's Eroica, James Hamilton-Paterson reconstructs this great moment in Western culture, the shock of the music and the symphony's long afterlife.

Conversations with Beethoven

Conversations with Beethoven PDF Author: Sanford Friedman
Publisher: New York Review of Books
ISBN: 1590177886
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 313

Book Description
Inspired by the famous composer’s notebooks, this biographical novel offers “a perfect portrait of an irascible genius” and “revelatory fossils of the last year of Beethoven’s anguished life” (Edmund White) Deaf as he was, Beethoven had to be addressed in writing, and he was always accompanied by a notebook in which people could scribble questions and comments. In a tour de force fiction invention, Conversations with Beethoven tells the story of the last year of Beethoven’s life almost entirely through such notebook entries. Friends, family, students, doctors, and others attend to the volatile Maestro, whose sometimes unpredictable and often very loud replies we infer. A fully fleshed and often very funny portrait of Beethoven emerges. He struggles with his music and with his health; he argues with and insults just about everyone. Most of all, he worries about his wayward—and beloved—nephew Karl. A large cast of Dickensian characters surrounds the great composer at the center of this wonderfully engaging novel, which deepens in the end to make a memorable music of its own.
