Mathematical Modelling and Nonstandard Schemes for the Corona Virus Pandemic

Mathematical Modelling and Nonstandard Schemes for the Corona Virus Pandemic PDF Author: Sarah Marie Treibert
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3658359323
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
This book deals with the prediction of possible future scenarios concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the well-known SIR model by Kermack and McKendrick a compartment model is established. This model comprises its own assumptions, transition rates and transmission dynamics, as well as a corresponding system of ordinary differential equations. Making use of numerical methods and a nonstandard-finite-difference scheme, two submodels are implemented in Matlab in order to make parameter estimations and compare different scenarios with each other.

The Climate Planner

The Climate Planner PDF Author: Jason King
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000422623
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
The Climate Planner is about overcoming the objections to climate change mitigation and adaption that urban planners face at a local level. It shows how to draft climate plans that encounter less resistance because they involve the public, stakeholders, and decisionmakers in a way that builds trust, creates consensus, and leads to implementation. Although focused on the local level, this book discusses climate basics such as carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement of 2015, worldwide energy generation forecasts, and other items of global concern in order to familiarize urban planners and citizen planners with key concepts that they will need to know in order to be able to host climate conversations at the local level. The many case studies from around the United States of America show how communities have encountered pushback and bridged the implementation gap, the gap between plan and reality, thanks to a commitment to substantive public engagement. The book is written for urban planners, local activists, journalists, elected or appointed representatives, and the average citizen worried about climate breakdown and interested in working to reshape the built environment.

Myanmar's microfinance sector, agriculture, and COVID-19: Emerging insights and new challenges

Myanmar's microfinance sector, agriculture, and COVID-19: Emerging insights and new challenges PDF Author: Myanmar SSP Working Paper
Publisher: Intl Food Policy Res Inst
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 39

Book Description
This Working Paper takes comprehensive stock of the impacts of the first two waves of COVID-19 (in Q2 and Q4 2020) on the microfinance sector in Myanmar. We discuss potential impact pathways, review policy responses to the crisis, and present new quantitative analysis based on a set of surveys with respondents throughout the agricultural value chain. Additionally, we briefly review impacts since the military takeover on February 1, 2021. Overall, various disruptions to the microfinance sector, particularly during peak periods of COVID-19, significantly reduced overall lending from April 2020, onward. These disruptions, along with disruptions to external financing, led to greater informal borrowing, likely greater indebtedness, and lower food security. However, policy responses and financing accommodations to microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Q2 and Q3 2020 cushioned the sector against widespread insolvency. The events since the military takeover are creating new challenges, exacerbating the aforementioned impacts, and raising new risks of MFI insolvency and broader crises around food security, indebtedness, and poverty. Considering these findings, stakeholder recommendations underscore the importance of easing the movement of international and domestic goods. Efforts should be focused on meeting the MFIs’ need for loanable funds through mechanisms such as exchange rate hedging, credit guarantees, and loan enhancement, while continuing to encourage flexibility around existing financing. When the time comes for a full recovery, there should be a focus on facilitating additional financial injections so that MFIs can more effectively restart lending operations.

It Was a Good Plan!

It Was a Good Plan! PDF Author: Mark Stevens
Publisher: Troubador Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 1800465505
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
Sometimes you need a dream, and journeying the length of America's longest road is as dreamy as it gets. Attempting to complete the Pan American Highway during 2020 was, well, ultimately quite extraordinary! In October of 2019, Mark and his partner Selly headed for Patagonia with huge doses of excitement, just a little naivety and zero hindsight. Waiting for them were volcanoes, glaciers, an abundance of wildlife and enduring friendships. Also waiting were riots, breakdowns, a comical Caribbean island robbery and a not so comical fire, hurricanes and the occasional near-death experience. Oh, and the small matter of a global pandemic trapping them inside a Nicaraguan jungle-filled volcano crater, for several months. But then a twist of fate introduced them to ‘Mocha’, an adorable stray dog who won their hearts and insisted upon commandeering Mark's pannier. Her escape from Central America and back to England will prove just as gruelling as for her human companions. Sometimes, when the world spins upside down, the plans just get better!

Urban Health, Sustainability, and Peace in the Day the World Stopped

Urban Health, Sustainability, and Peace in the Day the World Stopped PDF Author: Ali Cheshmehzangi
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811648883
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
This book covers the nexus between urban health, sustainability, and peace. 'Urban Health, Sustainability, and Peace' is the first book that attempts to put these three critical areas together. This novelty approaches the subject matter by delving into evaluating what works, what does not work, and what should be done to achieve healthy cities. We believe this book will be beneficial to a wide range of stakeholders, particularly policymakers, planners, and developers, who continuously shape and reshape the structure and environments of our cities and communities. Unfortunately, in most cases, the healthiness of the cities may not be of their immediate concern. Nevertheless, it is the concern of the end-users, citizens, or simply those who live and work in cities and communities worldwide. To safeguard peace in cities, one has to consider sustaining urban health; and that is the main aim of this book. The ongoing pandemic gives us an excellent reason to study cities' health. During such a disruptive time, we detect many flaws in cities and communities around the world. We primarily identify the negative impacts on sustainability and peace in cities. In order to sustain a healthy city, this book evaluates six sustainability dimensions of physical, environmental, economic, social, institutional, and technical. It then utilizes eight primary dimensions of positive peace, evaluating critical areas for future considerations in urbanism. These considerations include making cities smarter, more resilient, and more sustainable. The book's ultimate goal is to highlight how we should progress to maintain and sustain urban health. As a continuation to 'The City in Need,', this book covers the nexus between urban health, sustainability, and peace. Furthermore, by reflecting on the ongoing pandemic crisis, metaphorically labelled as 'The Day the World Stopped,', we delve into some key areas beyond the usual planning and policy guidelines. Lastly, the book intends to highlight what has not been studied before, i.e., the relationship between urban health, sustainability, and peace.
