Both the way we look at data, through a DBMS, and the nature of data we ask a DBMS to manage have drastically evolved over the last decade, moving from text to images (and to sound to a lesser extent). Visual representations are used extensively within new user interfaces. Powerful visual approaches are being experimented for data manipulation, including the investigation of three dimensional display techniques. Similarly, sophisticated data visualization techniques are dramatically improving the understanding of the information extracted from a database. On the other hand, more and more applications use images as basic data or to enhance the quality and richness of data manipulation services. Image management has opened a wide area of new research topics in image understanding and analysis. The IFIP 2.6 Working Group on Databases strongly believes that a significant mutual enrichment is possible by confronting ideas, concepts and techniques supporting the work of researcher and practitioners in the two areas of visual interfaces to DBMS and DBMS management of visual data. For this reason, IFIP 2.6 has launched a series of conferences on Visual Database Systems. The first one has been held in Tokyo, 1989. VDB-2 was held in Budapest, 1991. This is the third book devoted to theoretical issues in data bases that we have edited. Each book has been the outgrowth of papers held at a workshop in Toulouse, France. The first workshop, held in 1977 focused primarily on the important topic of logic and databases. The book, Logic and Databases was the result of this effort. The diverse uses of logic for databases such as its use as a theoretical basis for databases, for deduction and for integ rity constraints formulation and checking was described in the chapters of the book. The interest generated by the first workshop led to the deci sion to conduct other workshops focused on theoretical issues in databases. In addition to logic and databases the types of papers were expanded to include other important theoretical issues such as dependency theory which, although it sometimes uses logic as a basis, does not fit with our intended meaning of logic and databases explored at the first workshop. Because of the broader coverage, and because we anticipated further workshops, the second book was entitled, Advances in Database Theory - Volume 1. The book "Logic and Databases" should be considered Volume 0 of this series.

The intrusion of the Internet drastically modified the historical cycles of communication between authors, providers and users. Today, information is often the result of the interaction between data and the knowledge based on their comprehension, interpretation and prediction. Nowadays important goals involve the exchange of heterogeneous information, as many real life and even specific scientific and technological problems are all interdisciplinary by nature. For a specific project, this signifies extracting information, data and even knowledge from many different sources that must be addressed by interoperable programs. Another important challenge is that of corporations collaborating with each other and forming coalitions and partnerships. One development towards achieving this challenge is organizational hubs. This concept is new and still evolving. Much like an airport hub serving air traffic needs, organizational hubs are central platforms that provide information and collaboration specific to a group of users' needs. Now companies are creating hubs particular to certain types of industries. The users of hubs are seen as communities for which all related information is directly available without further searching efforts and often with value-added services.
