Book Description
Excerpt from Gondi Grammar and Vocabulary Gender. - The masculine'gender in Gondi is used simply for the names of males: all other objects may be spoken of as neuter or feminine. It is difficult to decide under which name non masculine nouns should be grouped if the lan guage be viewed from the stand-point of its neighbour, Hindi, they should be called feminine, but as one of the Dravidian languages it is more natural perhaps to view them as neuter. Number. - There are two numbers, singular and plural: dual does not exist in Gondi. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Elements of Luganda Grammar

Elements of Luganda Grammar PDF Author: William Arthur Crabtree
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331930641
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Luganda Grammar: Together With Exercises and Vocabulary IN learning an unwritten language, there are many difficulties. Those who have a sensitive ear for sounds readily learn the language on the spot from the people, but have much difficulty in writing it down. Less gifted people often require to work by written rules; and it is only after several years of patient labour that they begin to appreciate the various sounds, and to study the proper value of each vowel and consonant. And without this study it is well nigh impossible to 'speak like a native, ' or even to be understood by the uneducated peasant. No doubt in the case of those first mentioned the study is unconscious; but it is none the less real. Others again seem to occupy an inter mediate position; and these require to see the word written down before they feel able to remember it, or to follow the voice-sounds of that word as spoken by a native.
