Book Description
During the 1990s, nowhere was the virus of militant ethnic nationalism more deadly than in the Balkans. America and its allies ultimately played an indispensable role stopping atrocities and creating conditions for sustainable peace; now, after a decade of extensive involvement, the international community is looking to wind down its commitment in the region. The Center for Preventive Action, a conflict prevention initiative of the Council on Foreign Relations, formed this Independent Task Force to develop tangible and practical recommendations to put the Balkan states irreversibly on the path toward integration with Europe, and to allow the international community to reduce its presence in an orderly fashion by 2010. The Task Force's key recommendations include: first, the European Union taking the lead on the Balkans, but with American leadership and partnership to ensure that U.S. interests -- particularly in the areas of military reform and the combating of organized politico-criminal syndicates that undermine regional and even global security -- are safeguarded; second, shifting the priorities of international and local actors toward the standards of the European Union and NATO accession plans, and using conditionality -- "carrots and sticks" -- by the international community to achieve its priorities; third, increasing investment and trade in the Balkans through banking-sector reform, privatization of state- or publicly owned corporations, private-sector development, and legislative and judicial action on property rights. The Task Force included senior experts on the Balkans and U.S. foreign policy from a cross-section of think tanks, government, the military, international organizations, academia, and the business community. In Search of the Balkan Recovery
Author: Christopher Cviic
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
In the early 1990s, the Balkans was rocked by the collapse of communism and the violent breakup of Yugoslavia. Yet the last decade has seen Southeastern Europe transform into one of the most dynamic emerging markets in the world. In Search of the Balkan Recovery tracks Yugoslavia's political evolution from conflict to cooperation and the role of growing investment and trade opportunities in facilitating this recovery. Cviic and Sanfey read the history of Yugoslavia's violent disintegration against similar events in Bulgaria, Romania, and Albania. They critically examine the involvement of the international community and contrast it against the procrastination of European leaders and the more constructive "soft power" approach of the European Union, among other institutions. They also trace the recovery of Balkan economic prospects in recent years and argue that, despite our current economic crisis, the downturn in the region's economic well-being is likely to be temporary.

The Balkans in Travel Writing
Author: Marija Knežević
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 144388345X
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
This book revisits images of the Balkans in twentieth-century travel writing that vividly mirrors the turbulent changes that the region went through. As such, it provides a vital basis for research into the variety of possibilities, or obstacles, present on the region’s path to accession, when its unique heritage will have to be reconciled with a more European identity. This volume explores the work of well-known authors, such as Rebecca West, Paul Theroux, Robert D. Kaplan, and also contributes to travel writing theory by addressing less-known travellers who recorded their thoughts on the social dynamics of the region. The corpus offers divergent and often contradictory views, ranging from moral and political criticism to a delight in the rich heritage and the still “undiscovered” Balkan paths. More importantly, its generic potentials prove to overcome both the discourse of power and the discourse of apology. Its narrative style also comprises striking variations, from the objective and well-researched approaches to quick impressionist sketches. Being a multi-generic form, travel writing is observed from a multidisciplinary perspective, encompassing fields such as literature, linguistics, history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, political sciences, and geography.

The Rise and Fall of Peacebuilding in the Balkans
Author: Roberto Belloni
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030144240
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 250
Book Description
This book examines the evolution of liberal peacebuilding in the Balkans since the mid-1990s. After more than two decades of peacebuilding intervention, widespread popular disappointment by local communities is increasingly visible. Since the early 2010s, difficult conditions have spurred a wave of protest throughout the region. Citizens have variously denounced the political system, political elites, corruption and mismanagement. Rather than re-evaluating their strategy in light of mounting local discontent, international peacebuilding officials have increasingly adopted cynical calculations about stability. This book explains this evolution from the optimism of the mid-1990s to the current state through the analysis of three main phases, moving from the initial ‘rise’, to a later condition of ‘stalemate’ and then ‘fall’ of peacebuilding.
