This volume addresses a wide range of issues concerning the economic exchanges that took place within the Black Sea region and between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean from about 600 BCE to 200 CE. Seeking to shed light on several central aspects of the economic relationship that existed between these two eminently important regions in antiquity, the contributors, who are scholars of ancient history and archaeology, consider old and new evidence, propose novel approaches and propound a number of fresh interpretations. "Excavations at the early Greek city of Old Smyrna were carried out jointly by British and Turkish teams. This volume presents a detailed account of the temples themselves, as cleared by the British team. The most important was that under construction c. 610-600 BC, though this was never completed; most of its superstructure apparently ended up in emergency walling, evidently constructed during the siege and sack of the city by Alyattes of Lydia in c. 600 BC. The conference on which the present volume is based took place in Oxford in the summer of 2006. It brought together linguists, archaologists, epigraphists, numismatists and historians and allowed them to exchange ideas about a period of major transition in Karian history: the fourth century and the two centuries after Alexander. This was first a period of great starapal visibility and presence, but then alsol of intense civic engagement and increased political awareness among Karian communities. The symbiotic relationship between the islands of the Dodekanese, in particular Rhodes and Kos, and the coastal regions of Karia forms another major theme.
