Here is a reprint of the English-Pali Dictionary by A.P. Buddhadatta Mahathera published long ago by the Pali Text Society in Roman script. This publication was then considered a notable event in the life of the Society for it was a great improvement on a similar earlier work by Venerable W. Piyatissa whose usefulness was reduced for the English-speaking readers by the Pali words being given in Sinhalese script. This is a consider ably enlarged form of a concise English-Pali Dictionary compiled by the present author during the second World War. The author has coined many new words and has given more than one Pali word for some English verbs which do not exist in the ancient languages like Pali. This dictionary, though not an exhaustive one, has proved much useful to the scholars of the Pali language as it presents well chosen material in a single volume of a manageable size. (by the same author) CONCISE PALI-ENGLISH DICTIONARY - This Concise Pali-English Dictionary has been prepared mainly for use by students in schools and colleges. The author is not only an eminent Elder of the Buddhist Order but one of the leading Pali scholars recognized both in the East and West as an authority on the subject. It is to be observed that the author has kept more or less to the traditional sense of words while not altogether ignoring the meanings given by western scholars in their translations and lexicons. Many errors in the latter sources have also been rectified. But the basic sense adopted is in nearly every instance the traditionally accepted meaning in accord with the commentaries and the glossaries. This perhaps is of special value to beginners as thereby they get introduced to the indigenous tradition, thus providing a useful basis on which to build up a more scientific knowledge as the study advances.

Here is the first translation into English of the Basava Purana, a fascinating collection of tales that sums up and characterizes one of the most important and most radical religious groups of South India. The ideas of the Virasaivas, or militant Saivas, are represented in those tales by an intriguing mix of outrageous excess and traditional conservatism. Written in Telugu in the thirteenth century, the Basava Purana is an anthology of legends of Virasaivas saints and a hagiography of Basavesvara, the twelfth-century Virasaiva leader. This translation makes accessible a completely new perspective on this significant religious group. Although Telugu is one of the major cultural traditions of India, with a classical literature reaching back to the eleventh century, until now there has been no translation or exposition of any of the Telugu Virasaiva works in English. The book is a natural outgrowth of research, the author has pursued over the past one decade on agrarian interests related to land tenures, peasant movements or anti-British revolts and in general the economic history of Andhra Pradesh in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Having written sporadically on various themes of agrarian and peasant history of Andhra region his efforts were directed towards pulling some of these strands together into a coherent history of agrarian relations and peasants in Andhra Pradesh in general and in Kalahasti Zamindari, in particular with its historical account from the beginning. The book contains eight chapters. In the first chapter the establishment of British power over Kalahasti Zamindari topography, administrative divisions, population and peshcush of Kalahasti are given in order to have a clear picture of the Zamindari. The second chapter deals with the relations of Kalahasti with the Indian ruling dynasties. The third chapter gives details about the aspects of the British-Kalahasti relations. The fourth chapter is devoted to an account of the pre-British revenue system in Kalahasti. The fifth chapter deals with the system of payments to the establishment in Kalahasti and suffering of ryots under the system. The sixth chapter surveys the effects of the systems of revenue and payments in Kalahasti before the establishment of British rule. The seventh chapter deals with the permanent settlement of revenues in Andhra Pradesh in general and in Kalahasti Zamindari in particular as introduced by the British East India Company. The eighth chapter, synthesizes the conclusions arrived at from the above study with a comparison with other systems of revenue. At the end of the book references to all the chapters are given. What is presented in the book is the result of many years of work on the records of the East India Company and on contemporary literature in the Tamil Nadu Archives and Connemera Library, both in Madras.
