In Die letzte Reckenburgerin (1871), Louise von François, one of the major female German-language writers of the nineteenth century, describes the fate of two women, the aristocrat Eberhardine von Reckenburg and the middle-class Dorothee Müller, set against the events of the French Revolution. This complex work is both an absorbing picture of the period, and a subtle psychological study with a strong feminist slant: François depicts Dorothee as a victim of a patriarchal society that robs her of any chance of self-development. The book thus has considerable significance in the light of recent feminist literary criticism. Professor Laane's detailed introduction gives an account of the the critical reception of the book in the United States - it was translated into English in 1887 by Mary Joanna Safford (under the pseudonym J.M. This volume brings together for the first time essays on both Claire and Yvan Goll. The Golls made distinctive contributions to the literary cultures of France and Germany in the first half of the twentieth century. Their writings shed much light upon their respective positions within the exile communities created by the First and Second World Wars, and in the inter-war avant-gardes of Paris and Berlin, whose cosmopolitanism and eclecticism they came to embody. The Golls' literary output was shaped by, and in turn helped to enrich, the experimental trends that often challenged or transcended conventional notions according to which genre and choice of literary language are stable phenomena. Upon publication in 1895, Gabriele Reuter's From a Good Family (Aus guter Familie) became something of a cultural event, making its author one of Germany's most talked-about women of letters. Set in the first two decades of the Second German Reich, this story of a Prussian bureaucrat's daughter caught between conformity and rebellion struck at the core of the class that upheld the empire, revealing the hypocrisy and misery at the very heart of the bourgeois family. It recorded the conflicted and ultimately interminable adolescence of a middle-class girl who failed to fulfill the destiny prescribed for her by her gender and class, a young woman who, despite an incipient high-spiritedness and independence of mind, internalized the attitudes of her culture to the point of lethal self-censorship. Gabriele Reuter (1859-1941) began writing in her teens but did not experience a literary and commercial breakthrough until the publication of From a Good Family in 1895. This success enabled her finally to live as a freelance writer. In addition to a string of popular novels she wrote essays and sketches for German and Austrian newspapers; in the 1920s and 1930s she regularly reviewed German books for the New York Times.
