Examining Moderating Effects of Key Processes on Insecure Attachment in Romantic Relationships

Examining Moderating Effects of Key Processes on Insecure Attachment in Romantic Relationships PDF Author: Maria C. Saavedra
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Attachment behavior
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
"This study examined self-reported negative conflict, mindfulness, physical affection, sexual intimacy, and emotional support as potential moderators of the links between attachment and relationship quality over time in a sample of 1501 individuals in relationships and a sample of 184 couples. All of the data were collected through online surveys and respondents were e-mailed follow up surveys every 3 months for a year and a half. The results suggested that key processes may interact differentially with attachment anxiety and avoidance. Specifically, when predicting relationship satisfaction, negative conflict moderated the effect of attachment avoidance such that high negative conflict and high attachment avoidance were associated with particularly low current satisfaction across studies. Physical affection and sexual intimacy were also both found to buffer the negative relationship between current relationship satisfaction and attachment avoidance. In contrast, attachment anxiety was found to be buffered by more internal processes. Specifically, the non-judging and observing dimensions of mindfulness were found to buffer the negative association between attachment anxiety and relationship functioning. Results are conceptualized within the framework of the Attachment System Activation Model, and implications for research and treatment are discussed"--Leaf v.

Stability and Change in Relationships

Stability and Change in Relationships PDF Author: Anita L. Vangelisti
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781139432054
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 414

Book Description
Understanding interpersonal relationships requires understanding actors, behaviors, and contexts. This 2002 volume presents research from a variety of disciplines that examine personal relationships on all three levels. The first section focuses on the factors that influence individuals to enter, maintain, and dissolve relationships. The second section emphasizes ongoing processes that characterize relationships and focuses on issues such as arguing and sacrificing. The third and final section demonstrates that the process of stability and change are embedded in social, cultural, and historical contexts. Chapters address cultural universals as well as cross-cultural differences in relationship behaviors and outcomes. The emergence of relational forms, such as the interaction between people and computers, is also explored. Stability and Change in Relationships will be of interest to a broad range of fields, including psychology, sociology, communications, gerontology, and counselling.
