Anything Will Be Easy After This

Anything Will Be Easy After This PDF Author: Bethany Maile
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 1496222423
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 229

Book Description
Bethany Maile had a mythological American West in mind when she returned to Idaho after dropping out of college in Boston, only to find a farm-town-turned-suburb instead of the Wild West wonderland she remembered. Haunted by what she had so completely misremembered, Maile resolved to investigate her attachment to the western myth, however flawed. Deciding to engage in a variety of "western" events, Maile trailed rodeo queens, bid on cattle, fired .22s at the gun range, and searched out wild horses. With lively reportage and a sharp wit, she recounts her efforts to understand how the western myth is outdated yet persistent while ultimately exploring the need for story and the risks inherent to that need. Anything Will Be Easy after This traces Maile's evolution from a girl suckered by a busted-down story to a more knowing woman who discovers a new narrative that enchants without deluding.

Recoding America

Recoding America PDF Author: Jennifer Pahlka
Publisher: Metropolitan Books
ISBN: 1250266769
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
Named one of NPR's Best Books of 2023 Named one of Ezra Klein's "Books That Explain Where We Are in 2023," The New York Times Learn more about Jennifer Pahlka's work at recodingamerica.us. “The book I wish every policymaker would read.” —Ezra Klein, The New York Times A bold call to reexamine how our government operates—and sometimes fails to—from President Obama’s former deputy chief technology officer and the founder of Code for America Just when we most need our government to work—to decarbonize our infrastructure and economy, to help the vulnerable through a pandemic, to defend ourselves against global threats—it is faltering. Government at all levels has limped into the digital age, offering online services that can feel even more cumbersome than the paperwork that preceded them and widening the gap between the policy outcomes we intend and what we get. But it’s not more money or more tech we need. Government is hamstrung by a rigid, industrial-era culture, in which elites dictate policy from on high, disconnected from and too often disdainful of the details of implementation. Lofty goals morph unrecognizably as they cascade through a complex hierarchy. But there is an approach taking hold that keeps pace with today’s world and reclaims government for the people it is supposed to serve. Jennifer Pahlka shows why we must stop trying to move the government we have today onto new technology and instead consider what it would mean to truly recode American government.

Functional Laws of Psychodynamics

Functional Laws of Psychodynamics PDF Author: E. Szekely
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461261708
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
This monograph describes the background, conduct, and outcome of part of a long-term project of research into the fundamental processes of psychodynamics. It was first theorized and then shown empirically that such research can lead to the formulation of certain general laws and lawful patterns in psychodynamics. Stated at higher levels of conceptualization, these formulations enable us to explain systemati cally the diverse configurations, effects, and intricacies of dynamic systems in psycho logical functioning. At the same time, the research reported here was intended to con tribute to ongoing efforts to secure a proper base for the study and management of intrapsychic, or inner functional, factors in health and illness. This research project has called for concerted inquiry into psychodynamics along a number of dimensions-theoretical, empirical, methodological, clinical, analytic, qualitative, quantitative, and statistical. The clinical programs required intensive inves tigations, such as in-depth psychodiagnostic examination or psychotherapeutic treat ment of individual patients as well as of nonpatient volunteers. The former were drawn from a large number of patients seen in various settings over several years, whereas the latter were selected from a group of university student volunteers.
