Book Description
Hillsboro, Kingston, and Lake Valley developed in 1877 with the discovery of gold and silver. The towns were interconnected, and the history of one cannot be discussed without the others. Hillsboro became the center of commerce and law, and from 1884 to 1939 it was the Sierra County seat. Mining created the towns, but cattle, sheep, and goat ranching provided a more stable economic base. The towns remain surrounded by large ranches, some still owned by the original families' descendants. When the mines played out, Lake Valley became a ghost town; Hillsboro and Kingston are now quiet villages with a mix of old families, writers, artists, and retirees. The area had its share of Indian wars, range conflicts, prostitutes, rustlers, floods, and politicos who rose to fame and fell in shame, but it also had hardworking businessmen, miners, and cowboys who lived peaceful daily lives. The authors of Around Hillsboro acknowledge the sensational and newsworthy events of the area's history while heralding the people who provided a productive but less visible part of it.

Hillsboro

Hillsboro PDF Author: Kimberli Fitzgerald
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738571829
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
Hillsboro began as a crossroads for the Native American Atfalati, retired trappers, missionaries, and land-hungry settlers whose collection of farms became East Tualatin Plains. These earliest residents were drawn to the rich valley land between the forested creeks. As the missionary influence waned and the railroads arrived in the 1870s, the town, by then called Hillsborough, was dubbed "Sin City." Farmers and merchants quenched their thirst and gambled in saloons and placed bets on horse races down Main Street. Throughout the early 20th century, Hillsboro became predominantly a conservative, family town. Residents enjoyed their town bands, theaters, and Carnegie Library. Then and now on the Fourth of July, proud farmers drive their state-of-the-art farm equipment in the downtown parade, and fireworks light up the sky at the County Fairgrounds. Today the crossroads is one of agriculture and high technology, as people from around the world become new residents of Hillsboro, drawn to the Tualatin River plain as were their predecessors.

Whiskey Before Breakfast

Whiskey Before Breakfast PDF Author: Benjy Griffith
Publisher: Mercer University Press
ISBN: 9780881461237
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
"Benjy Griffith's novel Whiskey before Breakfast is a Southern page-turner, told with humor and an uncanny ear for the Southern idiom. It presents a motley cast of Middle Georgia originals caught up in the struggles of the Great Depression." "The principal characters, thirteen-year-old Newt and his friend Jefferson will remind some readers of Huck Finn and Jim. Both boys have abusive fathers and both deal with challenging situations. While Huck's answer to most problems is an instantly devised tall tale, Newt, faced with even more perilous trials, relies on an innate understanding of what motivates human beings. Newt's compassion, expressed in his gentle protection of his mentally handicapped younger brother, also sets him apart. Jefferson, who experiences a life-changing moment during a rare visit to church, is also a more complex character than his counterpart, Jim. Standing out among the minor characters is Hap, a comical backwoods entrepreneur." "Earl Ham, Newt's profane, tyrannical father, has two main businesses: a sawmill and moonshine whiskey. He decides to move into rival territory, sending Jefferson, an alcoholic who will work for whiskey, along with Newt, who will sell the moonshine and protect the money. But this is Newt's story and it is one that will linger with the reader long after the final pages."--BOOK JACKET.
