Book Description
Excerpt from Arnold on the Education of the Deaf: A Manual for Teachers The original edition of Arnold's Education of Deaf Mutes; 'a Manual for Teachers, published by the College of Teachers of the Deaf in i8s8, ' having become exhausted, I was invited by the Committee of that body to undertake the publication of a new and revised edition of that work, a task which I have felt it my duty to accept and carry out to the best of my power. The original work undoubtedly met a pressing Want, created partly by the examinations of the above and other Colleges, and partly by the felt want of some systematic exposition of the special methods, especially the oral, of educating the deaf. While thus proving its value, it was obvious from both a technical and literary point of view, that it had many and grave defects which seriously militated against its utility either as a text book or as a work of reference. There is now no need to particularize these defects suffice it to say that the entire work has been subjected to a thorough revision, with the result, as I venture to hope, that its utility in this new edition has been thereby increased, as well as by (i) a better division and arrangement of the contents, so as to facilitate study and reference, (2) abridging or re-writing such parts as were considered to require it, and (3) elimi nating super uous or irrelevant matter, and in some cases substituting what is likely to prove more useful. It may be advisable to state in more detail what has accordingly been done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Education and the Handicapped 1760 - 1960

Education and the Handicapped 1760 - 1960 PDF Author: D.G. Pritchard
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136270280
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 259

Book Description
First published in 1998. This is Volume VIII of twenty-eight in the Sociology of Education series. During the nineteenth century and part of the twentieth the children now known as disabled or with accessibility needs were termed physically defective and mentally defective; the schools that they and the blind and the deaf attended were frequently called institutions; the education they received bore the name of instruction. This book is the story of the advance in opinion and outlook from 1760 to 1960, which brought about the change from instruction to education, from institution to school, and from mentally defective to those with special needs, that the book sets out to tell. Written in 1963.
