Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature

Pages : 144

Book Description
During the Mesozoic era, the southwestern US was a tropical or semitropical region of seas and lowland swamps, inhabited by reptiles of all sizes and descriptions. This introduction to dinosaurs that once inhabited what are now the western states gives a background on paleontology, the dating of fossils, the variety in types, sizes and habits, and several theories about the reasons for the disappearance of the dinosaurs. Extensively illustrated with drawings by John C. McLoughlin, this book is a readable, accurate introduction valuable to tourists, young scientists, and other readers interested in this era of southwestern history.

Dinosaur Paleobiology

Dinosaur Paleobiology PDF Author: Stephen L. Brusatte
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470656581
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
The study of dinosaurs has been experiencing a remarkable renaissance over the past few decades. Scientific understanding of dinosaur anatomy, biology, and evolution has advanced to such a degree that paleontologists often know more about 100-million-year-old dinosaurs than many species of living organisms. This book provides a contemporary review of dinosaur science intended for students, researchers, and dinosaur enthusiasts. It reviews the latest knowledge on dinosaur anatomy and phylogeny, how dinosaurs functioned as living animals, and the grand narrative of dinosaur evolution across the Mesozoic. A particular focus is on the fossil evidence and explicit methods that allow paleontologists to study dinosaurs in rigorous detail. Scientific knowledge of dinosaur biology and evolution is shifting fast, and this book aims to summarize current understanding of dinosaur science in a technical, but accessible, style, supplemented with vivid photographs and illustrations. The Topics in Paleobiology Series is published in collaboration with the Palaeontological Association, and is edited by Professor Mike Benton, University of Bristol. Books in the series provide a summary of the current state of knowledge, a trusted route into the primary literature, and will act as pointers for future directions for research. As well as volumes on individual groups, the series will also deal with topics that have a cross-cutting relevance, such as the evolution of significant ecosystems, particular key times and events in the history of life, climate change, and the application of a new techniques such as molecular palaeontology. The books are written by leading international experts and will be pitched at a level suitable for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers in both the paleontological and biological sciences. Dinosaurs and Other Extinct Saurians

Dinosaurs and Other Extinct Saurians PDF Author: Richard Moody
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862393110
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
The discovery of dinosaurs and other large extinct saurians - a term under which the Victorians commonly lumped ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs and their kin - makes exciting reading and has caught the attention of palaeontologists, historians of science and the general public alike. The papers in this collection go beyond the familiar tales about famous fossil hunters and focus on relatively little-known episodes in the discovery and interpretation (from both a scientific and an artistic point of view) of dinosaurs and other inhabitants of the Mesozoic world. They cover a long time span, from the beginnings of modern scientific palaeontology in the 1700s to the present, and deal with many parts of the world, from the Yorkshire coast to Central India, from Bavaria to the Sahara. The characters in these stories include professional palaeontologists and geologists (some of them well-known, others quite obscure), explorers, amateur fossil collectors, and artists, linked together by their interest in Mesozoic creatures.

Anatomy, Phylogeny and Palaeobiology of Early Archosaurs and Their Kin

Anatomy, Phylogeny and Palaeobiology of Early Archosaurs and Their Kin PDF Author: Sterling J. Nesbitt
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 1862393613
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 605

Book Description
Archosaurs, an important reptile group that includes today's crocodiles and birds, arose during the Triassic in the aftermath of the greatest mass extinction of all time. In the last 20 years, our understanding of the early evolution of the group has improved substantially with the discovery of new fossils and species of early archosaurs and their closest relatives, a better understanding of the relationships of these animals, and new insights into their palaeobiology. In order to synthesize these new data, researchers of early archosaurs from around the world met at the first symposium of early archosaur evolution at the IV Congreso Latinoamericano de Paleontología de Vertebrados (September 2011) in San Juan, Argentina. This symposium facilitated collaboration and strove to paint a better understanding of these extraordinary animals. The resultant body of work is a state-of-the-art examination of early archosaur groups and their close relatives including historical, anatomical, biogeographical, evolutionary and palaeobiological data. This contribution furthers our knowledge of the anatomy, relationships, and palaeobiology of species-level taxa as well as more global patterns of archosaur evolution during the Triassic -- P. 4 of cover.
