The first 12 chapters explain, based on detailed historical facts on the Diaoyu Islands, the rise and decline of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the historical roles of China, Japan, and the United States in the history of the kingdom. The final chapter is an overview of the Sino-Ryukyuan, Japan-Ryukyuan and US-Ryukyuan relations, and further clarifies the issue of ownership of the Diaoyu Islands and their strategic position. The book examines the 500-year friendship between China and Ryukyu, recounting moving stories. Lastly, citing ancient documents and more, the books proves that the Ryukyus never owned the Diaoyu Islands and that these islands belong to China.

This book conducts detailed research and analysis on the relevant literature and historical evidence regarding the 640-year history of ancient and modern China and other countries since the Ming Dynasty, and clarifies the chain of evidence concerning the Diaoyu Islands in terms of the facts and jurisprudence. Island Disputes and Maritime Regime Building in East Asia
Author: Min Gyo Koo
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387896708
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 217
Book Description
islands has emotional content far beyond any material significance because giving way on the island issue to Japan would be considered as once again compromising the sovereignty over the whole Korean peninsula. For Japan, the Dokdo issue may lack the same degree of strategic and economic values and emotional appeal as the other two territorial disputes that Japan has had with Russia and the two Chinas – namely the Northern Territories/Southern Kurile Islands and the Senkaku Islands, respectively. Nevertheless, fishing resources and the maritime boundary issues became highly salient with the introduction of UNCLOS. Also, the legal, political, and economic issues surrounding Dokdo are all intertwined with Japan’s other territorial disputes to the extent that concessions of sovereignty on any of these island disputes could jeopardize claims or negotiations concerning the rest. South Korea and Japan have forged a deeper diplomatic and economic partn- ship over the past decade. A new spirit of partnership after the landmark joint declaration of 1998 culminated in the successful co-hosting of the World Cup 2002. At the end of 2003 the two neighbors began to negotiate an FTA to further strengthen their already close economic ties. South Korea’s decades-long embargo on Japanese cultural products has now been lifted, while a number of South Korean pop stars are currently sweeping across Japan, creating the so-called “Korean Wave” fever. A pragmatic calculation of national interests would thus suggest cooperative behavior.

FOCUSING ON THE DIAOYU ISLANDS
Author: Junmin Wang
Publisher: American Academic Press
ISBN: 1631815695
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 362
Book Description
This book mainly demonstrates the sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands, illustrates the significance, approach and means of peaceful settlement of the Diaoyu Islands dispute, and clarifies China’s principal stand on the Diaoyu Islands issue. According to mode of territorial acquisition, the critical date and the inter-temporal theory in international law, the Diaoyu Islands had been China’s territory rather than terra nullius or a part of Ryukyu before 1895. Therefore, Japan could not acquire the Diaoyu Islands by occupation. Instead, Japan acquired the Diaoyu Islands by cession during the Sino-Japanese War in 1895. In light of the situation and inter-temporal law of the critical date, China resumed her sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands after WWII. China beyond any doubt enjoys the sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands. China upholds the principle of peaceful settlement of the Diaoyu Islands dispute and strongly opposes settling the dispute by means of violence. Studies show that the settlement of the Diaoyu Islands dispute can be analyzed and studied in reference to the operational mode of the International Court of Justice, and China and Japan should take the Franco-German reconciliation model to resolve the Diaoyu Islands dispute politically.

The San Francisco System and Its Legacies
Author: Kimie Hara
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317637895
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 317
Book Description
In September 1951, Japan signed a peace treaty with forty-eight countries in San Francisco; in April 1952, the treaty came into effect. The San Francisco Peace Treaty is an international agreement that in significant ways shaped the post–World War II international order in the Asia-Pacific. With its associated security arrangements, it laid the foundation for the regional structure of Cold War confrontation: the "San Francisco System" fully reflected the strategic interests and policy priorities of the peace conference’s host nation, the United States. The treaty fell far short of settling outstanding issues in the wake of the Pacific War or facilitating a clean start for the "post-war" period. Rather, critical aspects of the settlement were left equivocal, and continue to have significant and worrisome implications for regional international relations. This book examines the key developments of the contentious political and security issues in the Asia-Pacific that share a common foundation in the post-war disposition of Japan, particularly the San Francisco Peace Treaty. These include both tangible and intangible issues, such as disputes over territories and "history" problems. Taking the San Francisco System as its conceptual grounding, the authors examine how these issues developed and have remained contentious long after the San Francisco arrangements. To provide bases for producing solutions, the chapters offer comprehensive accounts that explain and deepen our understanding of these complex regional issues and the San Francisco System as a whole. By closely and systematically examining the legacy and various ramifications of the San Francisco System, this fascinating book adds to our understanding of current and growing tensions in the region. As such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian studies, history, international relations and politics.

Assessing Maritime Disputes in East Asia
Author: Barthelemy Courmont
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317177975
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 259
Book Description
Combining practical and theoretical approaches, this book addresses the political, legal and economic implications of maritime disputes in East Asia. The maritime disputes in East Asia have multiplied over the past few years, in parallel with the economic growth of the countries in the region, the rise of nationalist movements, fears and sometimes fantasies regarding the emergence of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as a global power, increasing military expenses, as well as speculations regarding the potential resources in various disputed islands. These disputes, however, are not new and some have been the subject of contention and the cause of friction for decades, if not centuries in a few cases. Offering a robust analysis, this volume explores disputes through the different lenses of political science, international law, history and geography, and introduces new approaches in particular to the four important disputes concerning Dokdo/Takeshima, Senkaku/Diaoyu, Paracels and Spratlys. Utilising a comparative approach, this book identifies transnational trends that occur in the different cases and, therefore, at the regional level, and aims to understand whether the resurgence of maritime disputes in East Asia may be studied on a case by case basis, or should be analysed as a regional phenomenon with common characteristics. This book will be of interest to students of Asian Politics, Maritime Security, International Security, Geopolitics and International Relations in general.

Japan's Historical Disputes with Neighboring States
Author: Dmitry Streltsov
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 104014442X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 246
Book Description
This book examines Japan’s relationships with China, Russia, the states of the Korean Peninsula, and Taiwan. Analyzing key points of conflict, their roots, and current relations, it highlights their significance for each country. Avoiding a focus on sensitive issues of the historical past per se, it provides a Russian perspective on their impact in Japan and neighboring states, their place in the domestic political discourse, the image of modern Japan in the eyes of political elites and the public and assesses the prospects for improving unfavorable mutual perceptions. Problems of the historical past remain a significant factor in the deterioration of Japan’s relations with China, South Korea, and Russia. Notions of national prestige and historical disputes appear with increasing frequency on the international political agenda in East Asia, driven largely by the economic and military rise of China and the changing military-political balance of power in the region. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of area studies and international relations, especially those specializing in East Asian Studies, Japanese studies, the politics of memory in IR, and problems of national identity.
