A hybrid technique combining the Complex Multipole Beam Approach (CMBA) with the Method of Moments (MoM) for the solution of the problems of electromagnetic scattering is presented in this paper. In this technique the CMBA provides for a substantial reduction in the matrix size by taking advantage of the essentially band-limited spatial spectrum of the scattered field in the vicinity of smooth surfaces, while the MoM is employed for the modeling of non-smooth or inhomogeneous regions within the problem geometry. The key step in the CMBA is to represent the scattered field in terms of a series of beams produced by multipole sources located in a complex space. The CMBA not only reduces the number of unknowns, but also generates a generalized impedance matrix with a banded structure and a low condition number. In the present hybrid technique, the scattering properties of each complex region, requiring a relatively large number of unknowns per unit volume, are described in terms of a Beam-matrix, which is constructed numerically to relate the amplitudes of outgoing beams to those of incoming ones. The proposed direct solution scheme takes into account the interactions between all of the complex regions and the smooth portions of the scatterer geometry using an algorithm similar to the recursive T-matrix approach. This hybrid technique, that combines the CMBA with other conventional methods, is a versatile tool, and is expected to enhance the scope of application of the CMBA to a much wider class of problems.

Three different perspectives of electromagnetic radiation are presented here. The first employs the electric-field kink model, the second is based on a technique called FARS (Far-field Analysis of Radiation Sources), and the third uses time-domain solutions obtained from the TWTD (Thin-Wire Time Domain) model. The kink model demonstrates qualitatively that radiation is produced by "wriggling" a charge. The latter two provide more quantitative results, showing that radiation for a straight dipole can come not only from the source region and ends but also from along its length.

The subject of this Publications Report is electronic preparation and distribution of materials. I expect that most of our readers are now familiar with the recent special issue of IEEE Transactions on Education, which seems to have stimulated a considerable level of interest, both within and outside IEEE. To many ACES members, the immediate vision evoked when this topic arises for discussion is the dissemination of entire Journal and Newsletter issues to the ACES membership by electronic means. That is certainly part of the consideration, but there are numerous other preliminary mechanics which must be addressed and mastered prior to dealing with the matter of total document delivery by an electronic vehicle. The public indications from IEEE all point to the year 2000 as their target for an effective, comprehensive implementation of electronic methods; present experiments are apparently just that. To facilitate a corresponding start along the learning curve for ACES Publications, it appears appropriate that we should also begin our own experimentation during 1997.
