Radionuclide Detection by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Radionuclide Detection by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry PDF Author:

Book Description
Radionuclide detection by mass spectrometric techniques offers inherent advantages over conventional radiation detection methods. Since radionuclides decay at variable rates (half-lives) and via various nuclear transformations (i.e. emission of alpha, beta, and/or gamma radiation) their determination via radiation detection depends not only on decay systematics but also on detector technology. Radionuclide detection by direct atom measurement, however, is dependent only on technique sensitivity and is indifferent to decay mode. Evaluation of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) indicates this method to be superior conventional radiation detection techniques for many radionuclides. This work discusses factors which influence detection by both methods. Illustrative applications of ICP/MS to the ultra-trace determination of several radionuclides, including 129I, are presented. 20 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.

Book Description
The first edition of Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry andits Applications was written as a handbook for users who wanted abetter understanding of the theory augmented by a practical insightof how best to approach a range of applications, and to provide auseful starting point for users trying an approach or technique newto them. These objectives have been retained in the second editionbut a slight shift in emphasis gives the volume an overallperspective that is more forward looking. Structured into 11 chapters, the current edition is a thoroughrevision of the original, covering the principles of inductivelycoupled plasmas, instrumentation, methodology and applicationswithin environmental analysis, earth science, food science andclinical medicine. Each chapter, written by internationallyrecognised leaders in their specific subject areas, provides enoughdetail to be useful to both the new and experienced users. Fullaccount is taken of recent developments, such as high resolutioninstruments, novel detection systems and electrospraytechniques. Written for all analytical scientists but particularly thoseinvolved in atomic spectroscopy and in environmental, geochemical, clinical or food analysis, this timely and informative book will bean essential reference in their use of inductively coupled plasmasto achieve their own scientific goals.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry Handbook

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry Handbook PDF Author: Simon M. Nelms
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN:
Category : Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
With a level of detection of one part in 1015, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a highly sensitive tool in a huge range of analytical applications. Development of the technology continues rapidly, further opening up the scope for this invaluable analytical technique. Despite widespread interest and usage, little has been written to describe the analytical techniques and instrumentation in a format accessible to both new and experienced users of the technique. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry Handbook provides a thorough description of ICP-MS instrumentation and techniques, giving the reader sufficient knowledge to approach the technique with confidence.

The broadest source of information on analytical ICP spectrometry available in a coherent, single volume. Renowned contributors define theory, diagnostics, models, instrumentation and applications. They also discuss atomic emission, atomic fluorescence and mass spectrometries based on ICP sources for atomization, excitation and ionization. 'This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.' Analytical Chemistry '... a handy reference for anyone attempting to understand the theory of ICPs and how they work. The detailed discussions of the various types of instrumentation and methods will be quite helpful to students and researchers in the field who want to broaden their understanding of analytical atomic spectroscopy.' Applied Spectroscopy '...Everyone involved in elemental analysis using ICP should have this book. It is useful for both experienced and novice ICP spectroscopists.' Spectroscopy

Applications of Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry to the Determination of Actinides and Fission Products in High Level Radioactive Wastes at the Savannah River Site

Applications of Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry to the Determination of Actinides and Fission Products in High Level Radioactive Wastes at the Savannah River Site PDF Author: NE. Bibler

Category : Actinide elements
Languages : en
Pages : 11

Book Description
Four years of experience in applying inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to the analysis of actinides and fission products in high level waste (HLW) samples at the Savannah River Site has led to the development of a number of techniques to aid in the interpretation of the mass spectral data. Our goal has been to develop rapid and reliable analytical procedures that provide the necessary chemical and isotopic information to answer the process needs of the customers. Techniques that have been developed include the writing of computer software to strip the experimental data from the instrument data files into spreadsheets or into a spectral data processing package so that the raw mass spectra can be overlain for comparison or plotted with higher output resolution. These procedures have been applied to problems ranging from the analysis of the high level waste tanks to reactor moderator water as well as environmental samples. Criticality safety analyses in some HLW waste treatment processes depend upon actinide concentration and isotopic information generated by ICP-MS, particularly in tanks with high concentrations of 137Cs and 90Sr. Experimental results for a number of these applications will be presented. These procedures represent a considerable saving in time and expense as compared to conventional chemical separation followed by radiochemical analyses, as well as decreased radiation exposure for the analysts.

Handbook of Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry

Handbook of Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry PDF Author: Michael Thompson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461306973
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 452

Book Description
The first edition of our Handbook was written in 1983. In the preface to the first edition we noted the rapid development of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and its considerable potential for elemental analysis. The intervening five years have seen a substantial growth in ICP applications; much has happened and this is an appropriate time to present a revised edition. The basic approach of the book remains the same. This is a handbook, addressed to the user of the technique who seeks direct, practical advice. A concise summary of the technique is attempted. Detailed, theoretical treatment of the background to the method is not covered. We have, however, thoroughly revised much of the text, and new chapters have been added. These reflect the changes and progress in recent years. We are grateful to Mr Stephen Walton, Dr Gwendy Hall and London and Scandinavian Metallurgical Co. Ltd for their contributions. Chapter 3 (Instrumentation) has been rewritten by Mr Walton, the new Chapter on ICP-mass spectrometry has been written by Dr Hall, and London and Scandinavian provided much of the information for the chapter on metals analysis by ICP-AES. These chapters have been integrated into the book, and a conscious effort has been made to retain the unity of style within the book. New material has been added elsewhere in the book, archaeological materials are considered, pre concentration methods and chemometrics covered more fully.
