Book Description
Excerpt from Missions and Apostles of Medieval Europe For though it may be true that in early times the Teuton knew nothing of temples made with hands, that the Deity, whom no enclosure could contain, or mortal form rep resent, received the adoration of his wor shippers in the obscurity of the wood, or on the lonely mountain-top, yet without doubt the introduction of an elaborate form of polytheism brought with it in time a more elaborate form of external worship. The transition from the sacred oak-grove to the hill altar and the cairn was easy. Equally easy the transition thence to the temple of wood, with its nave and shrine, its holy place, and its holy of holies. In the Norse temples, formed doubtless on a plan common in earlier times, the images of the gods stood on a platform in a shrine. In front of them was the altar, on which burnt the holy fire. Ou it, too, was laid the great ring, which, stained with the sacred blood, was placed in the hand of all such as were about to take any solemn oath. Hard by also was the brazen vessel, in which the blood of the slaughtered victims was caught, and the brush or twig wherewith the worshippers were sprinkled, while they stood behind a partition-wall opposite the platform of the gods, and from this outer court beheld the ceremonies. Apostles, Fathers, and Reformers (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: John Bayne Ascham

Book Description
Excerpt from Apostles, Fathers, and Reformers Too often in human history the sharp contrast between actual conditions and the higher demands of the Christian ideal has discouraged those upon whom rested the responsibility for making that ideal real. A short-range view of life has obscured the actual growth of the Kingdom which the larger perspective of history reveals. In the face of the overwhelming preponderance of sin and selfishness in the world the Christian Church has again and again contented itself with snatching as many brands as possible from the burning, without, at the same time, seeking to organize the constructive forces of life and of society for the seemingly impossible task of putting out the conflagration. Thus the actual process of the Kingdom's coming among men has proceeded for the most part "without observation," like the first growth of the seed that has been buried in the soil. It is possible to-day, in the light of the completed records of the Old and New Testaments and the subsequent history of the Christian centuries, to discover definite stages of advance with successive landmarks of progress in the gradual establishment of the reign of God in individual lives and in the institutions of mankind. Such a survey of progress already achieved should hearten the organized Christian forces in their forward look and their endeavor to establish still more firmly among men the principles and ideals of the Kingdom. It should encourage the individual to redouble his efforts and inspire in him an unfaltering confidence in the ultimate realization and triumph of God's rule. Herein lies the purpose of the special course of study in the development of the kingdom of God in which this volume constitutes one textbook. Book Description
Excerpt from Apostles Such is the scope of this second book which we have called The Apostles, because it is devoted to that period Of common action, during which the little family cre ated by Jesus acted in concert and was grouped mo rally around a single point - Jerusalem. Our next and third book, will lead us out of this company, and will have for almost its only character the man who, more than any other, represents conquering and spreading Christianity - St. Paul. Although from a certain epoch he may be called an apostle, Paul, nevertheless, was not so by the same title as the Twelve 1 he was, in fact, a laborer of the second hour, and almost an intruder. Book Description
Excerpt from The Words of the Apostles Thus much I wrote as a portion of the preface to the first edition; and even now I cannot more clearly describe the per manent and fundamental character of the work. But, God be thanked, the complaints as to the prevailing Spirit of theology and exegesis which I then expressed cannot now be so forcibly repeated. Since then, much has been done in attaining to a greater progress in the devout and believing comprehension of Holy Scripture. Book Description
Excerpt from The Apostles As regards the date of Ads, Renan, proceeding on the assumption of Luke's authorship, tentatively assigns it to about the year 80; but Schmiedel Offers the choice of two later dates. The diver gence between the third Gospel and the Ads in the matter of the Ascension of Jesus - which in the Gospel takes place on the evening of the Resurrection, in Ads forty days later - indicates that the Gospel was the earlier writing; for the lengthened sojourn on earth argues a significant development of the idea already at work in the third Gospel, that, before his Ascension, Jesus must have continued on earth to have intercourse with his disciples and instruct them.3 The date of the third Gospel is gener ally put after 70, so Ads must have been written some years later, the surest datum being the author's ac quaintance with the works of Josephus, whopublishednothingbefore 79. Finally, Schmiedel concludes that Ads must be placed somewhere between 105 and 130, or, if the third Gospel already pre suppose acquaintance with all the writ ings Of Josephus, between 110 and 130.
