Este trabajo constituye una aportación a la investigación en Educación Matemática enmarcada en el conocimiento profesional del profesor de matemáticas. En él estudiamos cómo los profesores usan su conocimiento para ayudar a los alumnos a aprender álgebra a través de la resolución de problemas y cómo la reflexión en grupo y el trabajo en equipo ayudan a los profesores en su formación permanente. Para profundizar en estas ideas, planteamos tres objetivos de logros consecutivos. En primer lugar, diseñamos un conjunto de secuencias de tareas adecuadas para el aprendizaje del lenguaje algebraico a través de la resolución de problemas, implicando en su diseño a todos los profesores que participan en el estudio. Durante la primera fase partimos de unas dimensiones del álgebra escolar que nos permiten formular su aprendizaje en términos de competencia y caracterizar las tareas que ayudan a los alumnos a aprender a usar este lenguaje. En consecuencia, determinamos que el álgebra escolar es el lenguaje necesario para generalizar, formalizar, estudiar estructuras abstractas, expresar relaciones entre variables y modelizar. El segundo objetivo consiste en analizar cómo un grupo de cuatro profesores de 2o de ESO utiliza su conocimiento al implementar en sus aulas una misma secuencia didáctica. Para analizar la práctica docente utilizamos el Knowledge Quartet, una herramienta de análisis que nos ayuda a identificar cómo el profesor muestra el conocimiento en el aula a través de un conjunto de códigos contributivos que en su mayoría se identifican con acciones que realiza el profesor. Estos códigos, a su vez, están clasificados en cuatro dimensiones: fundamentos, transformación, conexión y contingencia. A partir del análisis concluimos que los profesores utilizan de forma natural y habitual conexiones entre diferentes representaciones de un mismo concepto u objeto matemático para dotar de significado a los símbolos algebraicos. Por eso hemos incorporado al Knowledge Quartet un código contributivo inédito al que hemos llamado "conexiones entre representaciones". Finalmente, el tercer objetivo consiste en identificar las características inherentes en la dinámica de trabajo en equipo que este grupo de profesores utiliza para diseñar tareas, implementarlas en el aula y reflexionar sobre su práctica docente. Se desprende de ello, de la misma forma que ocurre con los alumnos, que los profesores interiorizan más significativamente el conocimiento cuando este se adquiere vivencialmente. Son ejemplo de ello la toma de consciencia sobre la importancia de explicitar en el aula la conexión entre representaciones que manifiesta una de las profesoras que participó del estudio, o la interiorización de la destreza heurística "hacer una tabla de valores" para resolver un problema. En definitiva, en este trabajo de tesis mostramos cómo la interacción entre profesores, el trabajo en equipo y la planificación pueden contribuir a mejorar la enseñanza de las matemáticas, que es el fin último de la investigación en el área.

This book is a product of love and respect. If that sounds rather odd I initially apologise, but let me explain why I use those words. The original manuscript was of course Freudenthal’s, but his colleagues have carried the project through to its conclusion with love for the man, and his ideas, and with a respect developed over years of communal effort. Their invitation to me to write this Preface e- bles me to pay my respects to the great man, although I am probably incurring his wrath for writing a Preface for his book without his permission! I just hope he understands the feelings of all colleagues engaged in this particular project. Hans Freudenthal died on October 13th, 1990 when this book project was well in hand. In fact he wrote to me in April 1988, saying “I am thinking about a new book. I have got the sub-title (China Lectures) though I still lack a title”. I was astonished. He had retired in 1975, but of course he kept working. Then in 1985 we had been helping him celebrate his 80th birthday, and although I said in an Editorial Statement in Educational Studies in Mathematics (ESM) at the time “we look forward to him enjoying many more years of non-retirement” I did not expect to see another lengthy manuscript.
