Modern Antiques

Modern Antiques PDF Author: Barrett Kalter
Publisher: Bucknell University Press
ISBN: 1611483794
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 261

Book Description
The recovery and reinvention of the past were fundamental to the conception of the modern in England during the long eighteenth century. Scholars then forged connections between linear time and empirical evidence that transformed historical consciousness. Chronologers, textual critics, and antiquaries constructed the notion of a material past, which spread through the cultures of print and consumption to a broader public, offering powerful—and for that reason, contested—ways of perceiving temporality and change, the historicity of objects, and the relation between fact and imagination. But even as these innovative ideas won acceptance, they also generated rival forms of historical meaning. The regular progression of chronological time accentuated the deviance of anachronism and ephemerality, while the opposition of unique artifacts to ubiquitous commodities exoticized things that straddled this divide. Inspired by the authentic products as well as the anomalous by-products of contemporary scholarship, writers, craftsmen, and shoppers appropriated the past to create nostalgic and ironic alternatives to their own moment. Barrett Kalter explores the history of these “modern antiques,” including Dryden’s translation of Virgil, modernizations of The Canterbury Tales, Gray’s Gothic wallpaper, and Walpole’s Strawberry Hill. Though grounded in the ancient and medieval eras, these works uncannily addressed the controversies about monarchy, nationhood, commerce, and specialized knowledge that defined the present for the English eighteenth century. Bringing together literary criticism, historiography, material culture studies, and book history, Kalter argues that the proliferation of modern antiques in the period reveals modernity’s paradoxical emergence out of encounters with the past.

The Lustrous Trade

The Lustrous Trade PDF Author: Cinzia Sicca
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1441185909
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
In recent years, the Anglo-Italian sphere of artistic exchange in relation to painting has been an increasingly productive area of research. Here, contributors shift the focus onto the two countries' equally significant sculpture trade. This volume of selected essays by economic and social historians and historians of material culture and art investigates the varied roles and functions of sculpture and the ways in which this particular cultural exchange was manifested. Issues of business and the markets for sculpture are highlighted, both in the context of producers of "high"art and in the wider market of religious, garden and decorative sculpture.

Gods and Rollercoasters

Gods and Rollercoasters PDF Author: Crispin Paine
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350046280
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
This worldwide study examines how religion gets into theme parks – as mission, as an aspect of culture, as fable, and by chance. Gods and Rollercoasters analyses religion in theme parks, looking at how it relates to modernism, popular culture, right-wing politics, nationalism, and the rise of the global middle class. Crispin Paine argues that religion has discovered a major new means of expression through theme parks. From the reconstruction of Biblical Jerusalem at the Holy Land Experience in Orlando, through the world of Chinese mythology at Haw Par Villa in Singapore, to the great temple/theme park Akshardham in New Delhi, this book shows how people are encountering and experiencing religion in the context of fun, thrills and leisure time. Drawing on examples from six of the seven continents, and exploring religious traditions including Christianity, Daoism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam, Gods and Rollercoasters provides a significant contribution to the study of religion, sociology, anthropology, and popular culture.

The Grand Tour Diary of Frederica Murray, 1819-1820

The Grand Tour Diary of Frederica Murray, 1819-1820 PDF Author: Mark Guscin
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527564819
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
In 1819, the Murray family set out on one of the last Grand Tours before railways forever changed the way people travelled. The eldest daughter of the Second Earl of Mansfield, Lady Frederica Murray (later Stanhope, as she married James Hamilton Stanhope, the youngest son of the 3rd Earl of Stanhope) kept a diary on the tour, which this book explores in detail. The diary has never been published (not even mentioned in any of the Grand Tour literature) and is a fascinating and essential look at the Murray/Mansfield family, and Europe at the time. Frederica was a deeply observant traveller and noted down numerous picturesque and historical details; she was also very open and sometimes even cutting in her opinions when she came across something or someone she did not like. Frederica’s diary shows a very mature 19-year-old with clear opinions on art, literature and the world around her. This book will therefore be interesting for scholars of travel, Grand Tours, and Regency England and its society, as well as anyone with an interest in travel and history.
