Building Economics: Theory and Practice

Building Economics: Theory and Practice PDF Author: Rosalie Ruegg
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475746881
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 492

Book Description
We no longer build buildings like we used to nor do we pay for them in the same way. Buildings today are no longer only shelter but are also life support systems, communication terminals, data manufacturing centers, and much more. Buildings are incredibly expensive tools that must be constantly adjusted to function efficiently. The economics of building has become as complex as its design. When buildings were shelter they lasted longer than their builders. The av erage gothic master mason lived 35 or 40 years. Cathedrals took 3 or 4 hundred years to build. Cost estimates were verified by great great grandchildren of the original designer. Today, creative economics has become as important as creative design and creative building. The dient brings builder, contractor, architect, and facilities manager to account in their life time. The cost of building can therefore no longer be left to chance or act of god. Solutions are no longer as ingeniously simple as those proposed by a Flor entine builder early in the 15th century. He proposed to center the dome of S. Maria deI Fiore on a great mound of earth mixed with pennies. When the job was done street urchins would carry away the dirt in their search for the pennies. This was a serious suggestion offered by an early construction manager before Brunelleschi solved the problem more sensibly.

Fundamentals of Materials Science for Technologists

Fundamentals of Materials Science for Technologists PDF Author: Larry Horath
Publisher: Waveland Press
ISBN: 1478639539
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 550

Book Description
The properties of materials provide key information regarding their appropriateness for a product and how they will function in service. The Third Edition provides a relevant discussion and vital examples of the fundamentals of materials science so that these details can be applied in real-world situations. Horath effectively combines principles and theory with practical applications used in today's machines, devices, structures, and consumer products. The basic premises of materials science and mechanical behavior are explored as they relate to all types of materials: ferrous and nonferrous metals; polymers and elastomers; wood and wood products; ceramics and glass; cement, concrete, and asphalt; composites; adhesives and coatings; fuels and lubricants; and smart materials. Valuable and insightful coverage of the destructive and nondestructive evaluation of material properties builds the groundwork for inspection processes and testing techniques, such as tensile, creep, compression, shear, bend or flexure, hardness, impact, and fatigue. Laboratory exercises and reference materials are included for hands-on learning in a supervised environment, which promotes a perceptive understanding of why we study and test materials and develop skills in industry-sanctioned testing procedures, data collection, reporting and graphing, and determining additional appropriate tests.

Principles and Methods of Toxicology, Fifth Edition

Principles and Methods of Toxicology, Fifth Edition PDF Author: A. Wallace Hayes
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849337789
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 2304

Book Description
Founded on the paradox that all things are poisons and the difference between poison and remedy is quantity, the determination of safe dosage forms the base and focus of modern toxicology. In order to make a sound determination there must be a working knowledge of the biologic mechanisms involved and of the methods employed to define these mechanisms. While the vastness of the field and the rapid accumulation of data may preclude the possibility of absorbing and retaining more than a fraction of the available information, a solid understanding of the underlying principles is essential. Extensively revised and updated with four new chapters and an expanded glossary, this fifth edition of the classic text, Principles and Methods of Toxicology provides comprehensive coverage in a manageable and accessible format. New topics include 'toxicopanomics', plant and animal poisons, information resources, and non-animal testing alternatives. Emphasizing the cornerstones of toxicology-people differ, dose matters, and things change, the book begins with a review of the history of toxicology and followed by an explanation of basic toxicological principles, agents that cause toxicity, target organ toxicity, and toxicological testing methods including many of the test protocols required to meet regulatory needs worldwide. The book examines each method or procedure from the standpoint of technique and interpretation of data and discusses problems and pitfalls that may be associated with each. The addition of several new authors allow for a broader and more diverse treatment of the ever-changing and expanding field of toxicology. Maintaining the high-quality information and organizational framework that made the previous editions so successful, Principles and Methods of Toxicology, Fifth Edition continues to be a valuable resource for the advanced practitioner as well as the new disciple of toxicology.
