Annotations on the New Testament, Vol. 1

Annotations on the New Testament, Vol. 1 PDF Author: J. P. Dabney
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780282300623
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 580

Book Description
Excerpt from Annotations on the New Testament, Vol. 1: Compiled From the Best Critical Authorities, and Designed for Popular Use The citation of authorities is not without its perplexity. Two or three names have sometimes been annexed to comments when less would have sumced; and others again, resting an a single name, might have been confirmed, if necessary by the aid of more. An annotation, in some instances, will not need the authority which any name could give; being commend ed, by its own obvious good sense, to the judicious reader. Where, however, the view given of a passage, is somewhat un usual or novel, a different course is called for; and the Compiler accordingly, has in such instances, been at some pains, (as far as convenience would permit) to sustain, by the weight of untheri ties, the position he has taken, where the popular sense of a pas sage has been discarded as unsound and untenable. Discourse Analysis of the New Testament Writings

Discourse Analysis of the New Testament Writings PDF Author: Todd Scacewater
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781948048439
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 772

Book Description
For the first time, one volume includes a discourse analysis of every writing in the New Testament. Discourse analysis of written texts involves examining units of language higher than the sentence and considering how the author used those units of language to accomplish communicative purposes. But discourse analysis is not a clearly defined method. Rather, it is a linguistic perspective that provides numerous ways to approach and better comprehend a discourse. For this reason, most analysts bring their own unique research questions about a discourse and, therefore, their own methodology. Each author in this volume explains their methodology, presents a macrostructure of the discourse, and then analyzes microstructures and other aspects of the discourse that support the proposed macrostructure. The reader is able to see each methodology on display, each with their emphases, strengths, and potential weaknesses. Each chapter also provides the reader with a useful analysis of the discourse as a holistic unit, which will aid students, pastors, and scholars in studying entire New Testament writings to see how each part contributes to the whole.

The Jewish Annotated New Testament

The Jewish Annotated New Testament PDF Author: Amy-Jill Levine
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199927065
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 1268

Book Description
Although major New Testament figures--Jesus and Paul, Peter and James, Jesus' mother Mary and Mary Magdalene--were Jews, living in a culture steeped in Jewish history, beliefs, and practices, there has never been an edition of the New Testament that addresses its Jewish background and the culture from which it grew--until now. In The Jewish Annotated New Testament, eminent experts under the general editorship of Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Z. Brettler put these writings back into the context of their original authors and audiences. And they explain how these writings have affected the relations of Jews and Christians over the past two thousand years. An international team of scholars introduces and annotates the Gospels, Acts, Letters, and Revelation from Jewish perspectives, in the New Revised Standard Version translation. They show how Jewish practices and writings, particularly the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, influenced the New Testament writers. From this perspective, readers gain new insight into the New Testament's meaning and significance. In addition, thirty essays on historical and religious topics--Divine Beings, Jesus in Jewish thought, Parables and Midrash, Mysticism, Jewish Family Life, Messianic Movements, Dead Sea Scrolls, questions of the New Testament and anti-Judaism, and others--bring the Jewish context of the New Testament to the fore, enabling all readers to see these writings both in their original contexts and in the history of interpretation. For readers unfamiliar with Christian language and customs, there are explanations of such matters as the Eucharist, the significance of baptism, and "original sin." For non-Jewish readers interested in the Jewish roots of Christianity and for Jewish readers who want a New Testament that neither proselytizes for Christianity nor denigrates Judaism, The Jewish Annotated New Testament is an essential volume that places these writings in a context that will enlighten students, professionals, and general readers.
