Colette's Republic

Colette's Republic PDF Author: Patricia A. Tilburg
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 9781845455712
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
In France's Third Republic, secularism was, for its adherents, a new faith, a civic religion founded on a rabid belief in progress and the Enlightenment conviction that men (and women) could remake their world. And yet with all of its pragmatic smoothing over of the supernatural edges of Catholicism, the Third Republic engendered its own fantastical ways of seeing by embracing observation, corporeal dynamism, and imaginative introspection. How these republican ideals and the new national education system of the 1870s and 80s - the structure meant to impart these ideals - shaped belle époque popular culture is the focus of this book. The author reassesses the meaning of secularization and offers a cultural history of this period by way of an interrogation of several fraught episodes which, although seemingly disconnected, shared an attachment to the potent moral and aesthetic directives of French republicanism: a village's battle to secularize its schools, a scandalous novel, a vaudeville hit featuring a nude celebrity, and a craze for female boxing. Beginning with the writer and performer Colette (1873-1954) as a point of entry, this re-evaluation of belle époque popular culture probes the startling connections between republican values of labor and physical health on the one hand, and the cultural innovations of the decades preceding World War I on the other.

Peter of Auvergne

Peter of Auvergne PDF Author: Christoph Flüeler
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110228491
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 520

Book Description
peter of Auvergne (+1304) is one of the most productive and most influential commentators of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Paris, At the end of the 13th century Peter actually moved to the upper theological faculty, where he argued a number of quodlibeta. This volume of conference proceedings represents the first examination of the work of Peter of Auvergne as a whole. In addition, biographical information has been interpreted in new ways. Many of the contributions present research on aspects of his commentaries on the logical, natural philosophical, metaphysical, ethical, and political works of Aristotle, as well as aspects of his theological works. A comparison with contemporaneous authors demonstrates that Peter presents a thoroughly distinctive line of thought and that previous classifications must be differentiated or even discarded. In addition, Peter develops an astounding history of reception with some of his works that continued into early modernity.

Raymond Poincaré

Raymond Poincaré PDF Author: J. F. V. Keiger
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521892162
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 428

Book Description
This study is a scholarly biography of one of France's foremost political leaders. In a career which ran from the 1880s to the 1930s, one of the most formative periods of modern French history, Poincaré held the principal offices of state. He played crucial roles in France's entry into the Great War, the organisation of the war effort, the peace settlement, the reparations question, the occupation of the Ruhr and the reorganisation of French finances in the 1920s. His life and work is surrounded by controversy and myth, from 'Poincaré-la-guerre' to 'Poincaré-le-franc', which this book dissects. Using a host of new archival material, Professor Keiger explores the historiography of the man and his times and reveals, somewhat surprisingly, how animal rights and feminism could be as important to him as party politics and public finance.

Vietnamese Traditional Medicine

Vietnamese Traditional Medicine PDF Author: C. Michele Thompson
Publisher: NUS Press
ISBN: 9971698358
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
While reshaping our understanding of the history and development of traditional Vietnamese medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries, Michele Thompson's new book reaches across disciplines to open important perspectives in Vietnamese colonial and social history as well as our understanding of the Vietnamese language and writing systems. Traditional Vietnamese medicine is generally understood as an import from the Chinese tradition: Thompson's detailed historical and linguistic research restores agency and voice to practitioners of Vietnamese medicine, showing how the adoption of Chinese and then Western ideas of medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries relied on indigenous Vietnamese concepts of health and the human body. She mines medical manuscripts in Chinese and in Nom (vernacular Vietnamese) to capture various aspects of the historical interaction between Chinese and Vietnamese thought. She presents a detailed analysis of the Vietnamese response to a Chinese medical technique for preventing smallpox, and to the medical concepts associated with it, looking at Vietnamese healers from a variety of social classes. Thompson's account brings together colorful historical vignettes, contemporary observations and interviews, and textual analysis. It stands out as a demonstration of the power of the history of medicine to illuminate adjacent fields of enquiry. It will be of interest to historians of medicine globally and in East Asia, as well as to students of Vietnam and its complex process of modernization.
