Book Description
In November of 1991, with the Nile in flood, a breakaway faction of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) led by Riek Machar killed approximately 2,000 Dinka civilians in the southern Sudanese state of Jonglei in what would become known as the Upper Nile Dinka Massacre-as part of his power struggle with SPLA leader John Garang, Machar looked to exploit ethnic rivalries between the Nuer and the Dinka peoples. This is the horrifying maelstrom that swept up and displaced Chol-wdwuok and his extended family and would, nine years later, land him in a Kenyan refugee camp south of Lokichogio. Chol-wdwuok was a young boy at the time, young enough not to have been conscripted as a child soldier by the SPLA, which routinely took children as young as 13. Of course, this brutal massacre was but one act in a much longer play, namely the Second Sudanese Civil War which raged between the SPLA and the Sudanese government, which in 1991, was represented by the Revolutionary Command Council for National Salvation (RCC) under General (and President) Omar al-Bashir. The Second Sudanese Civil War was one of the longest civil conflicts on record, lasting 22 years from 1983 to 2005. Angels in Swollen Crises is a compelling nine-year thread (1991-2000) woven through the tattered fabric of bloody events that blanketed the region like a shroud. It is a story of unbelievable hardship and dislocation, following its narrator from childhood to young adulthood.

Book Description
Newly arrived in Kakuma Refugee Camp, adolescent Chelow has left much of his beloved family behind in South Sudan. With his brother and cousins for company, he gradually adjusts to the sometimes harsh camp life with good humour and a growing sense of duty to fulfill promises he has made to his family. Once Chelow sets his sights on a goal, there’s no stopping him (though the pretty girls in his class are a tempting distraction). But with fierce competition and many other students scrambling for the coveted top rankings at school—a near-guaranteed way out of the camp and on to a brighter future—Chelow has his work cut out for him. Staying up all night to study and working evenings and weekends as a bike-boy shuttling passengers in and between the camps, sometimes only fueled by one meal a day, Chelow’s hard work eventually pays off. He is offered a place in a prestigious high school and finds himself waving goodbye to family, friends, and community in search of a different life. He never loses sight, however, of the incredible odds he has beaten to get where he is. Of Rags and Grades is a meticulously-told labour of love detailing the life of one boy struggling against facelessness to build a name for himself and make his family proud.

Book Description
From the Introduction: We need not be surprised, then, that in the Middle Ages also there were rulers who aspired to supreme political and temporal power. The truly exceptional thing is that in medieval times there were always at least two claimants to the role, each commanding a formidable apparatus of government, and that for century after century neither was able to dominate the other completely, so that the duality persisted, was eventually rationalized in works of political theory and ultimately built into the structure of European society. This situation profoundly influenced the development of Western constitutionalism.

On a hot Sunday in August, the entire community of Little Blue, Nebraska, changed forever. Groups of Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapaho Indians attacked and destroyed nearly every home and stagecoach station in Little Blue. People were murdered or taken, homes burned. Rebecca Walker made sure her little brothers were safely hidden away but had no time to hide herself. Taken captive and sold to the Sioux, she wondered if she would ever be reunited with her loving, grieving family. With the relentless invasion of the white man, the Plains Indians found themselves at war, not only with them but with each other as they all struggled to survive. The Pawnee were angry as they were attacked yet again by the Sioux, and the food they worked for was stolen. The hunters decided to take back meat that was rightfully theirs. As they stormed the Sioux village, they expected bloodshed but not the presence of a striking young white woman. Standing Bear, a young Pawnee brave, felt shocked when he looked at her, thinking at first that she was a ghost. Little did he know that his impulsive decision to take her with them would profoundly impact his life and the lives of not only his people but of hers and so many others along their journey.
