Book Description
And Tell Us What You See is a remarkable collection of articles he published during his retirement years over a ten year period in the 1990s with the Amsterdam, NY newspaper, The Recorder. As evidence of his willingness to explore complexity on the printed page, his articles are relevant to our day in that they take on the very issues that once were and continue to be the hallmark of the United States Episcopal Church and much of American culture, in general. Fully human yet fully the Christian priest, Robert Haven here reveals remarkable ranges of passion regarding his loves, angers, faiths and doubts. As preacher and public speaker, par excellence, he was never one to shy away from controversy and so here, too, some of his work is political and some is religiously poetic. It is also occasionally contradictory from one page to the next. The fact is, he never claimed to have it all worked out theologically and when pressed in person on specific issues, he could wax eloquent, but could also just as easily be dismissive and silently keep his own counsel. But in these newspaper articles contained herein, there is no taking the “fifth amendment” as he opens up to us and explains his sometimes complex views. I think he ultimately felt, especially given his many years in church ministry, that he’d earned to right to speak as pastor to anyone who comes to him. He turns no one away. In this book, Father Haven engages our minds and allegiances as he attempts to provide some answers if not at least one meaning to his lifetime hero, Christ Jesus, his Lord.

The First 20 Hours

The First 20 Hours PDF Author: Josh Kaufman
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101623047
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Did You See Us?

Did You See Us? PDF Author: Survivors of the Assiniboia Indian Residential School
Publisher: Univ. of Manitoba Press
ISBN: 0887559247
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
The Assiniboia school is unique within Canada’s Indian Residential School system. It was the first residential high school in Manitoba and one of the only residential schools in Canada to be located in a large urban setting. Operating between 1958 and 1973 in a period when the residential school system was in decline, it produced several future leaders, artists, educators, knowledge keepers, and other notable figures. It was in many ways an experiment within the broader destructive framework of Canadian residential schools. Stitching together memories of arrival at, day-to-day life within, and departure from the school with a socio-historical reconstruction of the school and its position in both Winnipeg and the larger residential school system, Did You See Us? offers a glimpse of Assiniboia that is not available in the archival records. It connects readers with a specific residential school and illustrates that residential schools were often complex spaces where forced assimilation and Indigenous resilience co-existed. These recollections of Assiniboia at times diverge, but together exhibit Survivor resilience and the strength of the relationships that bond them to this day. The volume captures the troubled history of residential schools. At the same time, it invites the reader to join in a reunion of sorts, entered into through memories and images of students, staff, and neighbours. It is a gathering of diverse knowledges juxtaposed to communicate the complexity of the residential school experience.

Daddy, Tell Us About When You Were A Little Boy PDF Author: E. Snyder
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595254284
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
Working alone, to start with, I filled three pages of legal pads with two columns per page with notes on events in my life. The title of the book came from the incessant questioning by my daughters for stories of my life, and of the lives of those near and dear to me. In retirement since 1988, my wife and I have spent the winters in a deluxe country club complex in Florida and our summers on our 11-acre farm in Connecticut. I played golf, spent afternoons in the condominium pool, and, following advice given to me by my dad's brother, a doctor, I have a three-ounce martini every night to keep the blood thin and the heart relaxed.

Identical

Identical PDF Author: Robert De Cristo fano
Publisher: iUniverse

Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 398

Book Description
From the very first moment that we gaze upon our own face in a mirror, we are mesmerized. At first we don't even recognize that the image peering back at us is our own. Eventually we come to realize that the person in the mirror is indeed one with us, a part of us, and from that moment on, everything changes. Our reflection becomes an integral part of our life. Without it, life as we know it would be almost impossible. It is here, in front of that mirror, that we finally see, that which is very important, who we really are. So imagine for a moment what would happen if one day our image had suddenly, tragically, disappeared Identical twin brothers Marco and Luca Luna share everything. Growing up in a small town, they are an integral part of a loving family. They participate in sports, enjoy music, and are active in their local church. The brothers do everything together, perhaps because they are so much alike-and yet so different. Then one moment, and one event, changes everything-and nothing will ever be the same again
