Boost and buck-boost DC-DC converters are nonlinear systems by nature. This leads to complicated feedback when modeled to operate over large range of operating points. To resolve this issue Dr. Bob Hunt and Dr. Robert Taylor proposed a novel concept of applying input-output feedback linearization. Such converters operate over a large range of operating points without any right half plane zero effects. This work focuses on system level design and simulation of these converters using SIMPLIS software. Furthermore, a novel method to reduce the output voltage ripple without making any major hardware modification has been implemented. Additionally, the setups and results for various analyses such as line-load regulation, loop analysis, input voltage range, etc, are discussed. These analyses were carried out on prototype boards designed prior to this work.

The most critical part of the modern switching-mode power supply is the regulated dc/dc converter. Its dynamic behavior directly determines or influences four of the important characteristics of the power supply: • Stability of the feedback loop • Rejection of input-voltage ripple and the closely-related transient re sponse to input-voltage perturbation • Output impedance and the closely-related transient response to load perturbation • Compatibility with the input EMI filter Due to the complexity of the operation of the converter, predicting its dynamic behavior has not been easy. Without accurate prediction, and depending only on building the circuit and tinkering with it until the operation is satisfactory, the engineering cost can easily escalate and schedules can be missed. The situation is not much better when the circuit is built in the computer, using a general-purpose circuit-simulation program such as SPICE. A DC to DC converter is an electronic circuit which converts a source of direct current (DC) from one voltage level to another. There are three main topologies of converters which are buck converter, boost converter and buck-boost converter. This project is focus on Buck dc-dc converter using the hysteresis, PID and three-level hysteresis controllers. The buck dc-dc converter used to step down the input dc voltage from 24V to 12V. The hysteresis, PID and three-level hysteresis controllers are applied to control the switching of the switching device in buck converter so that the output voltage can be maintained 12V. The PID controller is the most common used in feedback control. The good output voltage can be obtained by well-tuning the P, I and D gains. The hysteresis control is a simplest method and inexpensive and easy in designing. The hysteresis band is derived from the converter current to predict the output voltage after the switching action. The term PID is defined as P for proportional, I for integral and D for derivative. The complete converter circuit is designed and implemented in MATLAB Simulink software. The analyses are carried out by make a comparison of the output voltage and load changes for all controllers.

DC-DC converters have many applications in the modern world. They provide the required power to the communication backbones, they are used in digital devices like laptops and cell phones, and they have widespread applications in electric cars, to just name a few. DC-DC converters require negative feedback to provide a suitable output voltage or current for the load. Obtaining a stable output voltage or current in presence of disturbances such as: input voltage changes and/or output load changes seems impossible without some form of control. This book tries to train the art of controller design for DC-DC converters. Chapter 1 introduces the DC-DC converters briefly. It is assumed that the reader has the basic knowledge of DC-DC converter (i.e., a basic course in power electronics). The reader learns the disadvantages of open loop control in Chapter 2. Simulation of DC-DC converters with the aid of Simulink® is discussed in this chapter as well. Extracting the dynamic models of DC-DC converters is studied in Chapter 3. We show how MATLAB® and a software named KUCA can be used to do the cumbersome and error-prone process of modeling automatically. Obtaining the transfer functions using PSIM® is studied as well. These days, softwares are an integral part of engineering sciences. Control engineering is not an exception by any means. Keeping this in mind, we design the controllers using MATLAB® in Chapter 4. Finally, references are provided at the end of each chapter to suggest more information for an interested reader. The intended audiencies for this book are practice engineers and academians.

The nonlinear behaviors of DC-DC converters have been studied heavily over the past 20 years, yet researchers are still unsure of the practical application of bifurcations and chaos in switching converters. The electromagnetic interference (EMI), which resulted from the high rates of changes of voltage and current, has become a major design criterion in DC-DC converters due to wide applications of various electronic devices in industry and daily life, and the question of how to reduce the annoying, harmful EMI has attracted much research interest. This book focuses on the analysis and application of chaos to reduce harmful EMI of DC-DC converters. After a review of the fundamentals of chaos behaviors of DC-DC converters, the authors present some recent findings such as Symbolic Entropy, Complexity and Chaos Point Process, to analyze the characters of chaotic DC-DC converters. Using these methods, the statistic characters of chaotic DC-DC converters are extracted and the foundations for the following researches of chaotic EMI suppression are reinforced. The focus then transfers to estimating the power spectral density of chaotic PWM converters behind an introduction of basic principles of spectrum analysis and chaotic PWM technique. Invariant Density, and Prony and Wavelet analysis methods are suggested for estimating the power spectral density of chaotic PWM converters.
