ABSTRACTImproving the efficiency of production, profitability and nutrient utilization are the most important factors for aquaculture companies. Many research efforts have been focused to develop strategies that improve the productive performance of shrimp farms. One recognized strategy is polyculture, which can considerably improve farm production yields by optimizing use of available resources. Tilapia production in shrimp ponds (with and without shrimp) has increased rapidly in many countries including Thailand, the Philippines, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and the inland desert of Arizona. A current practice in extensive, semi-intensive and intensive culture systems is the integration of tilapia with shrimp to increase total productivity. I tested this hypothesis in the present trials experimentally by co-cultivating tilapia and Pacific white shrimp in closed recirculating systems. The present series of experiments were carried out over a period of three years between 2007 and 2009. All of these studies were developed and conducted at the facilities of the Environmental Research Lab (ERL) of the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. A preliminary study included three treatments in low salinity water (5 ppt). White shrimp post larvae were stocked into cylindrical plastic pools and Red tilapias were stocked into aquaria. Equal numbers of shrimp were placed in all the treatments whereas fish (Red tilapia) density was variable. We found good growth and 100 % survival of shrimp and tilapia. The first experiment included five treatments with four replicates each with saline water of 10 ppt. Shrimp and Nile tilapia were weighed and distributed in 20 fiberglass tanks with capacity of 200 liters. There were evaluated finding statistically significant differences in growth of tilapia (P0.05) but no significant difference in growth of shrimp at different fish densities (P0.05)The second and third experiments included four treatments with four replicates each using the same shrimp density in each study but different fish density by treatment. Results of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for the second experiment showed a significant effect of the shrimp- tilapia polyculture on the growth of Pacific white shrimp (P0.05) but not for tilapia (P0.05) compared with monoculture. In the third experiment, there were significant differences in the growth of shrimp (P0.05) but not significant differences in the growth of fish (P0.05). These experiments were conducted using slightly different culture systems.

Yucca (Yucca schidigera) and Soapbark (Quillaja saponaria), both native desert plants, are major commercial sources of saponin extracts. Yucca schidigera is native to the southwestern United States and to the arid Mexican desert, and Quillaja saponaria is found in arid areas of Chile. Saponins have detergent or surfactant properties with both water-soluble and fat-soluble components. The use of natural saponins from yucca and soapbark as an additive in the diet, has improved production in aquatic organisms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of Nutrafito plus (NTF+), which is a mixture of Yucca and Soapbark extracts, on growth, survival, and development of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and the effect on growth, survival, development, and digestive enzyme activities for juvenile Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. The extracts were included at different levels in the diets of tilapia and shrimp in four experiments. In experiment 1, at the end of 6 weeks there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between growth rates of tilapia fed 6 different diets, with no mortality nor abnormal behavior in any of the treatments. Water quality parameters were determined weekly and remained within recommended limits for Nile tilapia culture. In the second trial, at the end of 40 days, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between growth rates of fish fed 7 different diets with various levels of Nutrafito. There were no mortalities during the experiment. In the third trial, 20 tanks (140 L each) were stocked with 10 shrimp each. Tanks were divided into 5 treatments with 4 replicates each. There was significant difference (p0.05) between growth rates of shrimp fed 5 different diets, with higher growth rate at higher levels of inclusion. In the fourth trial, 15 tanks (140 L each) were stocked with 10 shrimp each. Tanks were divided into 5 treatments with 3 replicates each. There was significant difference between growth rates and feed conversion ratio of shrimp fed 5 different diets. In addition, an analysis for digestive enzymes activity was done and no significant difference (p0.05) was found between treatments.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Biology - Miscellaneous, language: English, abstract: Carp polyculture is the most common, popular, and successful aquaculture system in Nepal. Including mono-sex Nile tilapia in carp polyculture could enhance fish productivity. This present LEE work was conducted at the Fish hatchery complex of Fisheries Program, Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, Chitwan, in a cemented tank of area 25 m2 for 26 days to study the carp and mono-sex Nile tilapia in a polyculture system. The pond was fertilized using urea and DAP at the rate of 4,7 g/m2/week and 3.5 g/m2/week respectively. Fishes except Grass carp were fed twice daily with the pellet made from mustard oil cake and rice bran mixed at a 1:1 ratio at the rate of 5% BW. Grass carp were fed with duckweed at a rate of 50% BW twice a day from 7:30 am to 8 am and 1:30 pm to 2 pm. Water quality parameters i.e., water temperature, transparency, water depth, dissolved oxygen, and pH and were monitored daily while total alkalinity was monitored weekly. Sampling of fish was done fortnightly to check fish growth and adjust feed quantity. All the water quality parameters were within the optimal range of fish production except for DO which was very high during the afternoon. The extrapolated GFY and NFY were 14.5 t/ha/yr and 9.6 t/ha/yr, respectively. The overall survival of fish was 87% and AFCR was 1.4. The total variable cost and the production cost was NRs. 220/kg. Fishes were transferred to the Aquaculture farm, assuming the selling rate NRs. 300/kg. This makes the total gross return was of NRs. 875, making a total net profit of NRs. 327. The B: C ratio was 1.59. From this LEE work, it was concluded that carp and mono-sex Nile tilapia polyculture is a reliable and profitable venture to carry out.

Tilapien zählen mittlerweile zu den wichtigsten in Aquakultur produzierten Fischarten. Sie stellen keine hohen Anforderungen und erreichen marktfähige Gewichte innerhalb kurzer Zeit. Insbesondere in der intensiven Aquakultur werden rein männliche Mastbestände bevorzugt. Diese lassen sich durch Hybridkreuzungen, den Einsatz von YY-Männchen oder durch das Verfüttern von testosteronhaltigem Futter an die Larven generieren. Dennoch beinhalten diese Methoden auch viele Nachteile wie hohe Kosten oder Umweltbelastung. Der erste Teil dieser Arbeit zeigt, dass sich temperaturbehandelte phänotypische Männchen (TPM) gleichermaßen für eine Aquakulturproduktion eignen. Im direkten Vergleich mit hormonbehandelten phänotypischen (HPM) und genetischen Männchen (GM) zeigten die TPM mindestens vergleichbare, in wichtigen Parametern sogar bessere Mastleistungen. Im zweiten Teil wurde der Einfluss der Beleuchtungsdauer und Lichtfarbe auf weibliche Tilapien untersucht. Eine längere Beleuchtungsdauer wirkte sich positiv auf das Wachstum aus. Weibchen, die unter einer Tageslichtphase von 18 h gehalten wurden, waren schwerer als die Vergleichsgruppe. Demgegenüber förderte eine gleiche Tag/Nachtlänge und eine blaue Beleuchtung die Gonadenentwicklung.
