The present volume reviews and revisits the life and work of Spanish writer, editor, and intellectual Esther Tusquets (1936–2012). The author of some seven novels, three collections of short stories, two books for children, seven volumes of essays and memoirs, and an extensive corpus of journalistic and other short prose texts, Tusquets’s contributions to contemporary Spanish culture and literature are vast and heterogeneous. Most academic scholarship to date has been dedicated to Tusquets’s groundbreaking novelistic trilogy (El mismo mar de todos los veranos [1978], El amor es un juego solitario [1979], Varada tras el último naufragio [1980]) and to her unified short-story collection, Siete miradas en el mismo paisaje (1979). The essays contained in Esther Tusquets: Scholarly Correspondences offer new readings of the author’s canonical fiction and delve into the largely unexplored terrain of her non-fiction. This innovative interdisciplinary study compares the uses of painting in literary texts and films. In developing a framework of four types of ekphrasis, the author argues for the expansion of the concept of ekphrasis by demonstrating its applicability as interpretive tool to films about the visual arts and artists. Analyzing selected works of art by Goya, Rembrandt, and Vermeer and their ekphrastic treatment in various texts and films, this book examines how the medium of ekphrasis affects the representation of the visual arts in order to show what the differences imply about issues such as gender roles and the function of art for the construction of a personal or social identity. Because of its highly cross-disciplinary nature, this book is of interest not only to scholars of literature and aesthetics, but also for scholars of film studies. By providing an innovative approach to discussing non-documentary films about artists, the author shows that ekphrasis is a useful tool for exploring both aesthetic concerns and ideological issues in film. This study also addresses art historians as it deals with the reception of major artists in European literature and film throughout the 20th century.

This book examines a selection of plays from four innovative women playwrights of the first two decades of 21st century Spain. This is a comprehensive study of the impact of censorship on theatre in twentieth-century Spain. It draws on extensive archival evidence, vivid personal testimonies and in-depth analysis of legislation to document the different kinds of theatre censorship practised during the Second Republic (1931–6), the civil war (1936–9), the Franco dictatorship (1939–75) and the transition to democracy (1975–85). Changes in criteria, administrative structures and personnel from these periods are traced in relation to wider political, social and cultural developments, and the responses of playwrights, directors and companies are explored. This is a scholarly edition of three stories by Carmen de Burgos (1867-1932), including the unabridged texts, vocabulary, notes, chronology, bibliography, 'temas de debate y discusión', and a critical introduction. De Burgos, also known by her pen-name of 'Colombine', was an influential journalist, socio-political activist, and a key literary figure in the cultural ferment of pre-war Madrid. She is currently being rediscovered, having languished in a long and regrettable oblivion during the Franco years. Confidencias (1920) is the fictional diary of a young married woman, describing her first adulterous relationship and exploiting the narratological possibilities of the diary form. La mujer fría (1922) is a vampire story featuring perhaps the very first pitiable vampire, or at least one of the earliest examples of this type, whilst ingeniously maintaining undecidability as to whether the protagonist is supernatural. Puñal de claveles (1931) narrates a wedding-day elopement and was inspired by a news item, the so-called 'Crimen de Níjar' of 1928. Federico García Lorca drew on de Burgos's story and the real-life crime for his Bodas de sangre, but while his play is tragic, Puñal is bathed in a golden glow of nostalgia for the author's native Andalusia and ends optimistically. As well as making accessible three individually interesting and entertaining stories, this book offers a varied selection, with some of the issues closest to Colombine's heart tackled from different perspectives, but adding up to a coherent critique of marriage conventions, women's poor education, and prevailing ideals of femininity.
