The Reunion

The Reunion PDF Author: Robert Callis
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1532075510
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
Curiosity has caused Carson “Kit” Andrews to drive over twelve hundred miles from his home in Kemmerer, Wyoming, back to Kankakee, Illinois, for his tenth high school reunion—curiosity in the form of finding out what has become of his classmates and friends after ten years in the real world. When he arrives in Kankakee, he encounters his best friend from high school, Mike “Stoney” Stoneman, who has also returned for the reunion, but for a different reason. In high school, Stoney was a quiet, almost timid, skinny kid who hung out with Kit and several other friends who were not in the mainstream of high school society. One of those friends was a cute girl named Rae Huber. Stoney had a crush on Rae all through high school but never worked up the courage to tell her how he felt. Ten years later, when Stoney is an officer in army intelligence, he realizes she is the one for him, and he has come to seek her out and let her know the truth. Unfortunately, Rae doesn’t show up. Stoney confesses his feelings for Rae to Kit, and they use the reunion to question everyone they could as to Rae’s whereabouts. When they finally got a clue, Stoney’s leave is almost up. Kit agrees to find Rae for his friend. With this simple promise, Kit begins a long, complicated journey full of twists and turns in what he thought would be a simple search for an old classmate. A simple task becomes both time-consuming and difficult, with more than a bit of danger tossed in.

Conversation

Conversation PDF Author: Talmy Givón
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027229295
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 311

Book Description
The papers in this volume were originally presented at the Symposium on Conversation, held at the University of New Mexico in July 1995. The symposium brought together scholars who work on face-to-face communication from a variety of perspectives: social, cultural, cognitive and communicative. Our aim for both the symposium and this volume has been to challenge some of the prevailing dichotomies in discourse studies: First, the cleavage between the study of information flow and the study of social interaction. Second, the theoretical division between speech-situation models and cognitive models. Third, the methodological split between the study of spontaneous conversation in natural context and the study of speech production and comprehension under controlled experimental conditions. And fourth, the rigid genre distinction between narrative and conversational discourse. All four dichotomies have been useful either methodologically or historically. But important as they may have been in the past, the time has perhaps come to work toward an integrated approach to the study of human communication, one that will be less dependent on narrow reductions. Both the ontological primacy and the methodological challenge of natural face-to-face communication are self evident. Human language has evolved, is acquired, and is practiced most commonly in the context of face-to-face communication. Most past theory-building in either linguistics or psychology has not benefited from the study of face-to-face communication, a fact that is regrettable and demands rectification. We hope that this volume tilts in the right direction.

Fat Off, Fat On

Fat Off, Fat On PDF Author: Clarkisha Kent
Publisher: Feminist Press at CUNY
ISBN: 1952177758
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
In this disarming and candid memoir, cultural critic Clarkisha Kent unpacks the kind of compounded problems you face when you’re a fat, Black, queer woman in a society obsessed with heteronormativity. There was no easy way for Kent to navigate personal discovery and self-love. As a dark-skinned, first-generation American facing a myriad of mental health issues and intergenerational trauma, at times Kent’s body felt like a cosmic punishment. In the face of body dysmorphia, homophobia, anti-Blackness, and respectability politics, the pursuit of “high self-esteem” seemed oxymoronic. Fat Off, Fat On: A Big Bitch Manifesto is a humorous, at times tragic, memoir that follows Kent on her journey to realizing that her body is a gift to be grown into, that sometimes family doesn’t always mean home, and how even ill-fated bisexual romances could free her from gender essentialism. Perfect for readers of Keah Brown’s The Pretty One, Alida Nugent’s You Don’t Have to Like Me, and Stephanie Yeboah’s Fattily Ever After, Kent’s debut explores her own lived experiences to illuminate how fatphobia intertwines with other oppressions. It stresses the importance of addressing the violence scored upon our minds and our bodies, and how we might begin the difficult—but joyful—work of setting ourselves free.
