Book Description
Excerpt from An Essay on the Best Way of Developing Improved Political and Commercial Relations Between Great Britain and the United States of America Some light may be thrown upon the subject before us by looking at the relations of a couple of neighbouring families. We will suppose them to be of the same lineage, but independent of each other, and therefore equal before the law. Let one be of modern growth, but intelligent, ambitious, and enterprising, with an immense and compact domain, of vast resources, and rapidly rising in all that constitutes true worth and dignity; - the other, with a still wider domain, but circumscribed in a homestead, having vast accumulations of wealth, and ennobled with the highest titles achieved through a history of a thousand years. In what way are the most friendly relations to be developed and preserved between two such families? We shall have to provide against the influence of mutual rivalries, the intrigues of mutual enemies, and the errors and wrongs inseparable from poor human nature. The success of our experiment will depend upon the full and constant recognition of two facts: first, that the families are wholly distinct - that they are two, and not one; and, secondly, that for all the purposes of this inquiry they are to be regarded as on equal ground. No assumptions of superiority in the one, no admissions of inferiority in the other, are allowable, because, by the supposition, each is as independent as the other; and each in its voluntary relations is subject only to its own will. Book Description
Excerpt from On the Past Relations Between Great Britain and the United States Our commercial relations with the United States of America being now at an end, and the differences existing between the two countries having been brought to the decision of the sword, after wasting more than twenty years in unprofitable concessions, and fruitless negotiations, it would answer no good purpose to go over all the grounds of the many errors we have committed, in our various transactions with the govern ment of these States. The whole diplomatic intercourse of this long period, betrays such a spirit of encroachment and fraud, on the part of the American government, and such a system of forbearance and fluctuation on the part of the British, as has no parallel, perhaps, in the history of nations. It has been repeatedly shewn, by able and patriotic writers, that we were by our inconsistent conduct, tacitly renouncing, in favour of America, the great principles on our mari time code, and that too, in behalf of a people who met every concession made by the British government with insult and fresh menaces, and who, in proportion as their extortions were admitted, came, at length, to consider them as so many natural rights. The success of their continued encroachments, and the indiscriminate acquiescence in their demands, served only to increase the haughtiness and extent of their claims; until, availing themselves of the moment when Great Britain had to contend against the united force of all Europe, directed by the evil genius of France, their importunities ripened into an open declaration of war. Book Description
'One of the most powerful books in the social sciences ever written. ... A must-read' Thomas Piketty 'The twentieth century's most prophetic critic of capitalism' Prospect Karl Polanyi's landmark 1944 work is one of the earliest and most powerful critiques of unregulated markets. Tracing the history of capitalism from the great transformation of the industrial revolution onwards, he shows that there has been nothing 'natural' about the market state. Instead of reducing human relations and our environment to mere commodities, the economy must always be embedded in civil society. Describing the 'avalanche of social dislocation' of his time, Polanyi's hugely influential work is a passionate call to protect our common humanity. 'Polanyi's vision for an alternative economy re-embedded in politics and social relations offers a refreshing alternative' Guardian 'Polanyi exposes the myth of the free market' Joseph Stiglitz With a new introduction by Gareth Dale

Book Description
Excerpt from Correspondence on the Present Relations Between Great Britain and the United States of America The change has been particularly sad to me'and my friends, who had formed interesting friendships in what they loved to look upon as the mother-country. I know that I must have loved you, wherever I might have met you; but I doubt not that my friendship for you and others was heightened by the sentiment that we were of one race, and that our countries, in the chief essentials of Christian civilization (at least so far as New England was concerned), were the same. England was to me a hallowed spot; and I looked for ward to another visit there as among the hepes of the future. My whole intercourse with your countrymen had led me to believe that there was a cordial good will towards us, which every man should do his utmost to cultivate and extend. The consciousness of sup posed superiority, which few of them know how to conceal, and many are not aware of as appearing in their manners, sometimes amused, but never offended me; and, until ten months ago, no passport to my hospitality, - humble indeed, but hearty, and to that of my friends generally, was more sure than an introduction as a gentleman from England. This feeling had been of late growing throughout our country with surprising rapidity and strength. It was exhibited (i should have thought unmistakably) in the universal gratification expressed throughout the land in the opportunity to evince our national good will in the restoration of the Arctic ship the Reso lute in sending an expedition in search of Sir John Franklin; in raising our flags at half-mast when Ha velock fell; in contributions for Ireland; and in the reception of your Prince, which no observer could mistake as a popular excitement for a pageant merely, instead of seeing In it the exhibition of a downright hearty good-will to your Queen and people. Had She landed on our Shores, it would have been more feel ingly demonstrated; and no monarch, at home, could receive an ovation more grateful to a' generous and noble heart than she would have met with here.
