Book Description
The coastline, terms the interface between land and water. Over one third of the world’s population lives either at the coasts or in adjacent coastal low land areas. The coast is a region of extreme energy contribution. The energy transported by waves, arrives at the coast and is obtainable for work. Thus the outcome is the processes of sediment transport causing morphological changes. As a result the coasts form the most rapidly changing places on earth's surface, playing an important role in global transportation of sediments. Hence studies on the coastal zone where air, land and water interact are a focus of particular interest among the scientific community. The coastal areas across the world are also of great economic importance as they contain copious natural resources and desired tourist destinations because of their immense scenic landscape. The port terminals and fishing harbors plays a key role in the worldwide economy through the transportation and storage of traded goods. On the other hand, their operating activities are extremely hurtful to marine and coastal environments if not properly maintained or monitored. The deeds of ports are the significant sources of environmental pollution and their construction may also harmfully affect the coastal environment, such as jetties/breakwater. The upcoming Vizhinjam seaport is a vital infrastructure to cater the container trades and these amenities may considerably dash the overall morphology and dynamics of the region. Hence to attain a preliminary view of its environmental conditions, a pilot study on the textural, mineralogical and geochemical distribution were analyzed in surface sediment samples of the Vizhinjam port area.

Caste, Class and Catholicism in India 1789-1914

Caste, Class and Catholicism in India 1789-1914 PDF Author: Kenneth Ballhatchet
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136816968
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
This is a study of the ways in which changing social expectations among Indian Catholics confronted the Roman Church with new questions, as well as giving fresh urgency to the old problem of the persistence of caste among Christians. Low-caste restiveness prompted different reactions among European missionaries and high-caste Indian priests, and the socio-economic significance of religious conversion became a problem that reached the level of the Apostolic Delegate, and eventually of the Pope. The English brought their social attitudes to India, where they became racial attitudes while retaining their triple functions of supporting authority structures, protecting vested interests and providing psychological reinforcement, Roman Catholic missionaries came from different European countries and brought with them different national attitudes to social mores. A major question asked in this book is how far such national differences were reflected in attitudes to caste, class and sexual behaviour, how similar were the attitudes of Indian Christians, and how far the functions of such attitudes remained constant.

Responsible Leadership PDF Author: Nicola M. Pless
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400739958
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 129

Book Description
These chapters on ‘Responsible Leadership’ represent the latest thinking on a topic of increasing relevance in a connected world. There are many challenges that still remain when it comes to establishing responsible leadership both in theory and practice. Whilst offering conceptualisations for the improvement of leadership is a first and perhaps easier response, what is more difficult is to facilitate the actual change to happen. These chapters will not only generate interest in the emerging domain of studies on responsible leadership, but also will pave the way for future research in this area in the years to come. Wetland Science

Wetland Science PDF Author: B. Anjan Kumar Prusty
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 8132237153
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 593

Book Description
This book is an attempt to acknowledge the discipline ‘wetland science’ and to consolidate research findings, reviews and synthesis articles on different aspects of the wetlands in South Asia. The book presents 30 chapters by an international mix of experts in the field, who highlight and discuss diverse issues concerning wetlands in South Asia as case studies. The chapters are divided into different themes that represent broad issues of concern in a systematic manner keeping in mind students, researchers and general readers at large. The book introduces readers to the basics and theory of wetland science, supplemented by case studies and examples from the region. It also offers a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers in allied fields such as environmental studies, limnology, wildlife biology, aquatic biology, marine biology, and landscape ecology. To date the interdisciplinary field ‘wetland science’ is still rarely treated as a distinct discipline in its own right. Further, courses on wetland science aren’t taught at any of the world’s most prestigious universities; instead, the topics falling under this discipline are generally handled under the disciplines ‘ecology’ or under the extremely broad heading of ‘environmental studies’. It is high time that ‘Wetland Science’ be acknowledged as an interdisciplinary sub-discipline, which calls for an attempt to consolidate its various subtopics and present them comprehensively. Thus, this book also serves as a reference base on wetlands and facilitates further discussions on specific issues involved in safeguarding a sustainable future for the wetland habitats of this region.

The Sri Lankan Economy

The Sri Lankan Economy PDF Author: Prema-chandra Athukorala
Publisher: Asian Development Bank
ISBN: 9292579746
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 291

Book Description
This is a pivotal period in Sri Lanka's economic development. The end of conflict opens a door for accelerated economic growth and poverty reduction. Reform is needed to regain momentum because fiscal imbalances and rising public debt could jeopardize macroeconomic stability. The economy would benefit from significant trade and commercial policy reform. The labor market suffers from sluggish growth of formal sector employment and from skills mismatches, which can be addressed by changes in education policy and systems. The book analyzes these and related critical constraints on the Sri Lankan economy, and proposes a set of policy reforms that would lay the foundations for more rapid and inclusive development.
