Low Stress Grinding for Quality Production
Author: Guy Bellows
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Grinding and polishing
Languages : en
Pages : 124
Book Description
It has been known for many centuries that grinding can 'burn' metal and reduce its strength. Beginning in the 1940's this knowledge was quantified as seen by the example of the fatigue strengths produced by grinding AISI 4340 steel, quenched and tempered to 50 r sub c: (1) Low stress grinding 102 KSI; (2) Conventional grinding 75 KSI; and (3) High stress grinding 62 KSI. The values shown represent the fatigue strength at ten to the 7th power cycles at room temperature for flat cantilever specimens run at full reverse bending. The specimens were prepared with three different levels of grinding intensity. The substantial strength reduction, even with conventional grinding parameters, is of concern where the ground components are to be used in highly stressed applications.
