Formidable

Formidable PDF Author: Terry Crowdy
Publisher: Pen and Sword Maritime
ISBN: 139908769X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
“It's all well-written and well-illustrated with 208 black and white photos and two black and white maps.” — Historical Miniatures Gaming Society HMS Formidable was a British aircraft carrier during the Second World War. One of four Illustrious-class carriers, Formidable was an armored carrier, able to withstand air attacks, guarding its precious aircraft hangar with an armor-plated flight-deck. As well as its squadrons of fighters and torpedo bombers, Formidable was armed with sixteen 4.5-inch dual-purpose guns, mounted in eight turrets. When action stations sounded, in one of these turrets, sweating in the tropical heat due to heavy asbestos anti-flash gear, lifting shells from the hoist to the gunner, while frantically turning the air into a ‘plum pudding’ of smoke and flame to smash the enemy kamikaze from the sky, was the author’s grandfather, Arthur Flint. Illustrated with almost 200 contemporary photographs throughout, Formidable is a memorial to the voyages and service of Arthur Flint and his shipmates during the war, from the Battle of Matapan, the landings in North Africa, Sicily and Salerno, to the arctic hunt for Tirpitz, before Formidable steamed east to Sydney in 1945 and joined the British Pacific Fleet, fighting alongside the Americans at Okinawa and the final assault against Japan.

Singapore Burning

Singapore Burning PDF Author: Colin Smith
Publisher: Penguin UK
ISBN: 0141906626
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 969

Book Description
Churchill's description of the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942, after Lt-Gen Percival's surrender led to over 100,000 British, Australian and Indian troops falling into the hands of the Japanese, was no wartime exaggeration. The Japanese had promised that there would be no Dunkirk in Singapore, and its fall led to imprisonment, torture and death for thousands of allied men and women. With much new material from British, Australian, Indian and Japanese sources, Colin Smith has woven together the full and terrifying story of the fall of Singapore and its aftermath. Here, alongside cowardice and incompetence, are forgotten acts of enormous heroism; treachery yet heart-rending loyalty; Japanese compassion as well as brutality from the bravest and most capricious enemy the British ever had to face.

Book Description
Crete, May 1941. Against all odds the Everards must survive a relentless Luftwaffe assault. The situation is dire for British forces in the Mediterranean. Their ships, with no air cover, have to run the gauntlet of 2,000 German bombers; and can only lick their wounds under cover of darkness. Nick Everard commands the destroyer Tuareg as it ventures well inside Stuka territory. There they are ordered to evacuate a body of troops, plus an Australian field hospital and thirty nurses, from right under the Germans’ noses. The soon-decimated flotilla has to make it round the Aegean, then out of Crete – but only a miracle can save them! Last Lift from Crete combines gripping personal drama with incredible naval action, and is a must-read for fans of Alistair MacLean and C. S. Forester. Praise for Alexander Fullerton ‘Impeccable in detail and gripping in impact’ Irish Independent ‘His action passages are superb and he never puts a period foot wrong’ Observer ‘The research is unimpeachable and the scent of battle quite overwhelming’ Sunday Times

Red Tobruk

Red Tobruk PDF Author: Gregory Smith
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1844158624
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Red Tobruk, the war memoir of the Captain of HMS Eridge from late 1940 until August 1942 is a superb account of wartime action at sea. Frank Gregory-Smith_s war started on the destroyer Jaguar and he saw action off Norway and during the Dunkirk evacuation, when she was hit by enemy air attack with 25 men killed. Command of the new escort destroyer HMS Eridge followed (he was to be her only Captain) and they deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean, and so began a gruelling 18 months of convoys to Tobruk and Malta under German controlled skies. ORed Tobruk_ was the name for the enemy aircraft warning that the Tobruk radar station put out which all sailors dreaded as it meant yet another attack was imminent. Eridge survived countless such attacks. She fought in the famous Battle of Sirte when the powerful Italian fleet was seen off. She had to pick up survivors, take stricken ships in tow and once had only blanks to fire at attacking enemy aircraft. Among Eridge_s achievements was the sinking of U-568 in May 1942. The author's luck finally ran out in August 1942 when Eridge was torpedoed by an Italian MTB. Under constant air attack, she was towed to Alexandria but was irreparable. Saddened by the loss of his ship but cheered by the Allies' increasing superiority, Gregory-Smith returned to Britain having been awarded two DSOs and one DSC (a second followed at D-Day). All this and more is told in the most graphic and moving fashion in this exceptional memoir, which will recall to many readers that naval classic The Cruel Sea. The big difference, of course, is that Red Tobruk is a true personal account.
