The Guardians

The Guardians PDF Author: Clark Kerr
Publisher: Association of Governing Boards of Universities & Colleges
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
The American institution of Academic Boards of Trustees is examined, with attention to their operation and conduct; their importance to the effective functioning of American higher education; whether their roles are subject to erosion over time; and their relationship to the college presidency. The analysis is based partially on interviews conducted in previous Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) studies on the college presidency, and returned survey responses (N=1,400) on board operations from board chairs, presidents and heads of campus faculty organizations who were serving in 1987. The monograph covers various aspects of the operations of the boards of trustees, including their functions, their historical development, and trends. A number of evaluations are made, major problem areas are identified (such as drawing the line between what the board does and what the president and other administrators do) and 22 recommendations are advanced. The appendixes include the following items: (1) a list of participants; (2) the questionnaire itself; (3) various documentation, including reports relating to the board of trustees; and (4) a 12-page annotated bibliography. Why Galaxies Care about AGB Stars (IAU S343)

Why Galaxies Care about AGB Stars (IAU S343) PDF Author: Franz Kerschbaum
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781108471527
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
Stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB stars) play an important role due to their high luminosity and production of heavy elements and cosmic dust. They are prime laboratories for studying situations where different physical and chemical processes work simultaneously, on different time scales. IAU Symposium 343 builds a bridge between research on AGB stars themselves and their applications to the modelling of stellar populations and the chemical evolution of galaxies. Our understanding of these complex stars is given using insights into many aspects of physics and chemistry, while very high-angular resolution observations of AGB stars and their surroundings provide strong constraints on stellar theory and how they lose matter through strong stellar winds. This volume also highlights the difficulties in estimating the importance of AGB stars for various aspects of galaxies. Current developments and challenges of these complex objects are discussed for a broad, interdisciplinary audience of astronomers.
