The global market of modern and contemporary African art performed strongly in 2016 with a sell-through rate of 72% in a morose context of the international art market and the slowing down of African economies. This segment proved to be an exception. The huge direct and indirect investments, mainly in western countries as well as new structural initiatives in Africa ranging between US$ 300 million to US$ 400 million in the last five years. Modern art led the market with a sell-through rate of 76%, and 55% in value of the total amount of sales, reaching US$23.3 million. Bids that exceeded the symbolic threshold of US$1 million rose by 200%, including 50% for modern art and 50% for contemporary art. Strauss & Co, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, is the leading auction house for the total amount of works sold with 31% in value and 57% of lots. Auction houses based in the African continent counting for 46.1% of the total value, fetching US$19.6 million and 93.2% of lots London held the most important place in the market in 2016, considering the number of operators in our study that organised sales (40% of the total), the number of proposed lots (2.9% of the total) and of sold lots (28.1% and US$11.9 million in the year) and institutional and commercial exhibitions. Collecting the Now offers a new, in-depth look at the economic forces and institutional actors that have shaped the outlines of postwar art history, with a particular focus on American art, 1960–1990. Working through four case studies, Michael Maizels illuminates how a set of dealers and patrons conditioned the iconic developments of this period: the profusions of pop art, the quixotic impossibility of land art, the dissemination of new media, and the speculation-fueled neo-expressionist painting of the 1980s. This book addresses a question of pivotal importance to a swath of art history that has already received substantial scholarly investigation. We now have a clear, nuanced understanding of why certain evolutions took place: why pop artists exploded the delimited parameters of aesthetic modernism, why land artists further strove against the object form itself, and why artists returned to (neo-)traditional painting in the 1980s. But remarkably elided by extant scholarship has been the question of how. Crop receipts are a promising innovation in agricultural finance first developed in Brazil about 20 years ago and recently replicated in Eastern Europe. Crop Receipts allow farmers to obtain pre-harvest finance against a promise to produce a certain amount of crops, with their future farm production serving as main collateral. Taking inspiration from past successes, this study examines the scope for adapting crop receipts to the African context and for introducing them on a pilot basis. The study analysis of the evolution of crop receipts and explores opportunities, challenges and entry points for crop receipt in Africa. Crop receipt pilots in Uganda and Zambia are considered based on a detailed assessment of the legal frameworks, financial and agricultural sectors, and stakeholder consultations. The report closes with the main findings and offers some strategic and operational considerations for introducing crop receipt finance in Africa. The study was conducted by the FAO investment Centre within its partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) with co-funding from the GAFSP Private Sector Window. While the primary objective of the study is to guide IFC in exploring concrete investment opportunities for piloting crop receipts, its findings and recommendations could be of interest to a broader set of stakeholders in agricultural finance and development.
