AEC Regents in Service
Reliance Motor Services
Author: David Wilder
Publisher: Pen and Sword Transport
ISBN: 1526760355
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 391
Book Description
The life and times of an independent, British family-owned bus company based in Berkshire that rose up following World War I. Between the two world wars and in the years that followed, several generations relied on country buses. In the days when few could afford a car, the bus was the medium to move between homes in often remote villages and the places where they increasingly went to school, worked, and enjoyed their leisure hours. This is the story of one such chain of villages across the Berkshire Downs—and the family-owned business that grew up around satisfying their needs. George Hedges came back from World War I to become a horse-drawn carrier, but with ambitions to motorize his business. With his family taking the wheel in the 1950s and beyond, Reliance extended its reach nationwide and even internationally. The small village where it all started, Brightwalton, woke in the mornings to the cough of diesel engines from both Reliance buses and a relative’s lorries. When both businesses departed, the village lost many of its jobs, its two pubs, and very nearly its school. This book is not just for bus lovers but for anyone who looks back with fondness on the era before the motor car choked free movement and changed life.

AEC Regent V
Author: Stewart J. Brown
Publisher: Ian Allen Pub
ISBN: 9780711035393
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 96
Book Description
The AEC Regent V was a front-engine double-deck bus manufactured by the Associated Equipment Company between 1954 and 1969, when, as a result of the introduction of the Bus Grant in 1968, production of front-engine buses ceased. The Regent V was the successor to the Regent III and was fitted with AEC's own design of concealed radiator and was supplied generally with either an AEC or Gardner engine. The AEC Regent V found a ready market among British municipal operators, with examples seeing service in fleets nationwide, and with BET-group companies. Apart from the domestic market, the chassis was also widely exported; 210, for example, were sold to Kowloon Motor Bus in Hong Kong. Examples of the Regent V survived in service until the 1980s and a significant number survive in preservation. Transport expert Stewart J. Brown presents the latest title in his string of successful volumes. The book includes descriptive text alongside hundreds of evocative color illustrations.

East Kent Road Car Company Ltd: Services of the Golden Jubilee Era
Author: Richard Wallace
Publisher: The Crowood Press
ISBN: 1785005588
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 423
Book Description
East Kent - Services of the Golden Jubilee Era takes the reader on a journey along the routes of all the stage-carriage services operated by East Kent in 1968, just after the Company celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1966/7, and immediately prior to the National Bus Company (NBC) taking full control. This book reveals the contrasting nature of East Kent's services from rural byways to the seasonal, but very busy routes serving the still-popular resorts around the Kent coast. It includes a comprehensive fleet list and details a specimen allocation of cars to each service on a typical day in 1968; local route maps of all major town services as well as a sectionalised reproduction of the original East Kent network map of 1968 and, finally, a summary of the Centenary celebrations of 2016. It is superbly illustrated by over two hundred and fifty photographs, most not published before, of nearly every bus route as well as most London express services and all the operational garages. The author has worked as a driver and a conductor for EKRCC and part owns an ex-East Kent AEC Regent V.

Buses Along the South West Coast Path from Minehead to Poole Harbour via Land's End
Author: Andrew Bartlett
Publisher: Pen and Sword Transport
ISBN: 1526755432
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 181
Book Description
A pictorial history of buses in the south west of England and a traveler’s guide to things to see and do along the breathtaking South West Coast Path. When one thinks of public transport in the south west over the years, two names tend to dominate; Western National and Devon General. But as this book with a difference shows, there was much more to it. While it features buses past and present from a variety of operators large and small, it does so by following the route of one of the most well-known walks in England. The South West Coast Path stretches for 630 miles from Minehead in Somerset, through Devon and Cornwall along the north coast to Land’s End, and back along the south coast to Poole harbor in Dorset. It boasts some spectacular scenery and regularly appears in lists of the world’s best walks. So this is not just a book about public transport, it is also a travelers’ guide to things to see and do along the length of the Coast Path. Readers can imagine themselves at the front of their own imaginary tour bus, stopping at key points along the way. The photographs of buses date from the 1920s through to the 2010s, and feature over twenty-five different operators. There are brief notes on the way in which the Coast Path connects these places and the availability of modern-day bus services between them, and should any further encouragement be needed to plan a visit to the area, scenic views of some of the most beautiful locations are also included. It is hoped that this unique volume will appeal not just to bus enthusiasts but to anyone interested in visiting this glorious part of the United Kingdom. “Most books are written for a single audience, but this one addresses at least three. The bus enthusiast will find concise histories of over twenty-five operators along the coast from the 1920s to the present day and many unique photographs. The walker is offered details of bus services along the Coast Path enabling a series of linear walks with transport to and from base camp, as well as 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey Landranger maps of each section. The tourist or holiday maker is offered ‘Things to see’ with details and scenic views of some of the most beautiful and fascinating locations in the country. Buses Along the South West Coast Path is thoroughly recommended. It should be in the rucksack or picnic hamper of anyone heading to this lovely corner of England.” —John Ashley, Journal of the Road Transport History Association

A Coach Load of Chaos
Author: Rob Sissons
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1425162096
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
William explained that the nave had round-headed arches and had been built by the Normans. "Gee! We have them in the States, you know, at Salt Lake City," Mr Murray remarked to his wife. "Honey, I think those are 'Mormons'. He said 'Normans'." William Simpson has everything he wants in life except a girlfriend. He loves his job, guiding coach tours of France, but he has never forgotten his schooldays and the bullies, prefects and teachers who made his adolescence a misery. One day his boss offers him ten complimentary places on his next tour. Rather than take his friends, William looks up his old enemies, and invites them on a free holiday none of them will ever forget. Remembering their personalities, interests and foibles, William is determined to get his revenge in a very special way! At the same time our hero has to look after a motley group of real holidaymakers, maintain the Entente Cordiale in his dealings with French hoteliers, save his coach driverís marriage and find out if he really is falling in love with his bossís bus-mad secretary - or she with him? As Tour F443/07 wends its way through rural France, William wonders whether any of his victims will recognise him, and whether they will make it back home! While his passengers fill up on vin ordinaire, he discovers new uses for a Norwegian Tourist Board video and an old halfpenny. A hilarious story about romance, money, revenge, cheap wine, bad coffee and an AEC Regent V with Park Royal bodywork.
