Advances in Upper and Lower Extremity Microvascular Reconstructions

Advances in Upper and Lower Extremity Microvascular Reconstructions PDF Author: Fr‚d‚ric Schuind
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812778209
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
Advances made in microsurgical techniques during the last three decades have dramatically improved the treatment of complex limb injuries, such as a closed fracture covered by healthy tissue and a complex open fracture of the tibia. Microvascular transfers from the foot have revolutionized the treatment of digital amputations, and vascularized bone transfers are used in various indications. The microvascular techniques are still evolving. Many imaginative new flaps are being proposed to meet precisely the functional requirements of the various defects. Alternative anastomotic techniques are being investigated and the no-flow phenomenon has been extensively studied. Allotransplantation may be feasible in the future. This unique book is a result of the exchange of ideas among clinicians of various specialties noted for their innovations and basic researchers involved with the problems of microvascular reconstruction of upper and lower extremities. While most of the chapters are invited contributions, some are based on presentations made during an international symposium held in Brussels, Belgium, in 1997.

Reconstructive Surgery of the Hand and Upper Extremity

Reconstructive Surgery of the Hand and Upper Extremity PDF Author: Günter Germann
Publisher: Thieme Medical Publishers
ISBN: 9781626236011
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
Reconstructive surgery of the upper extremity has progressed significantly due to advances in microsurgical techniques, which include the increased popularity of perforator flaps, refinements in functional free muscle transfer, the application of nerve conduits and nerve allografts, motor nerve transfers, and hand transplantation. These innovations have helped surgeons achieve functional reconstruction goals and enabled patients' return to normal functioning earlier than previously possible. Reconstructive Surgery of the Hand and Upper Extremity presents a unique, color-coded roadmap for managing the complex upper extremity patient, based on a logical approach to surgical decision-making. Authors Gunter Germann, Randolph Sherman, and L. Scott Levin deliver seven systematically organized sections and 69 chapters with versatile, evidence-based guidelines and techniques. Strategic approaches and a video chapter covering patient examination reflect the collective wisdom gleaned from the authors' experience in the care of the upper extremity patient. Key Highlights Insightful guidance provided in 115 treatment-specific algorithms Patient histories and photos offer practical clinical information on a full continuum of cases-from gunshot wounds to tumors Over 500 high quality illustrations and graphics, many redrawn for this edition, delineate injuries and reconstruction techniques Richly illustrated atlas of flaps with nearly 140 new color photos details diverse approaches, including pearls and pitfalls Handy tables clearly outline rehabilitation protocols, classification, and zones of injury Includes bonus e-book version The text provides an invaluable framework to help both surgical residents and veteran upper extremity surgeons achieve optimal outcomes in their patients.

Microsurgical Reconstruction of the Extremities

Microsurgical Reconstruction of the Extremities PDF Author: Leonard Gordon
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461238021
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
On April 23, 1906, Alexis Carrel presented his manuscript entitled "The Surgery of Blood Vessels" to the Johns Hopkins Medical Society. His work on the tech nique of small vessel anastomosis and the transplantation of visceral organs earned him the Nobel Prize in 1912. The use of magnification in operative surgery began in 1921 with the work of Nylen, who first employed the microscope for reconstructive procedures in the middle ear. Jacobson and Suarez published their initial observa tions on the use of microsurgery for the anastomosis of small vessels in 1960, and two years later, Malt reported the historic replantation of an upper extremity. To surgeons involved in reconstruction of the extremities, the evolution of micro surgery has provided the most significant advances of the past three decades. The dramatic clinical successes of replantation surgery and free tissue transfer have substantially improved functional and cosmetic results in addition to decreas ing morbidity in patients who present with complex reconstructive problems. Mi crosurgical Reconstruction of the Extremities crosses the traditional surgical discip lines and will be invaluable to orthopaedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, hand sur geons, and general surgeons, as well as to residents and fellows.
