Maps That Changed The World

Maps That Changed The World PDF Author: John O. E. Clark
Publisher: Batsford Books
ISBN: 1849943869
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 536

Book Description
An ancient Chinese proverb suggests, "They are wise parents who give their children roots and wings – and a map." Maps That Changed the World features some of the world's most famous maps, stretching back to a time when cartography was in its infancy and the 'edge of the world' was a barrier to exploration. The book includes details of how the Lewis and Clark Expedition helped map the American West, and how the British mapped India and Australia. Included are the beautifully engraved Dutch maps of the 16th century; the sinister Utopian maps of the Nazis; the maps that presaged brilliant military campaigns; charted the geology of a nation; and the ones that divided a continent up between its European conquerors. Organised by theme, the book shows the evolution of map-making from all corners of the globe, from ancient clay maps, to cartographic breakthroughs such as Harry Beck's map of the London underground. There are also famous fictional maps, including the maps of the lost continent of Atlantis and Tolkien's Middle Earth. With an introduction written by acclaimed cartographic historian Jeremy Black.

Decree

Decree PDF Author: G. H. Spaulding
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1403364303
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
Originally published as a mass market paperback in 1999, DECREE delivers a chilling preview of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and renders a scenario that is even more plausible in the wake of security measures adopted since then. Its plot reveals how terrorists might destroy key American targets without resort to hijacking airliners. In DECREE, Islamic extremists continue their campaign to import terrorism to the United States. This time their target is Denver International, the crown jewel of American airports. Forewarned of the attack, airport authorities face a dilemma: should they close the airport in response to a credible threat, thereby setting a dangerous precedent, or defy the terrorists by keeping it open? Will even the most sophisticated security measures at their disposal protect DIA from obliteration? DECREE goes much deeper than other novels of its genre to illustrate how Islamic extremists twist the teachings of their religion to suit their own evil purposes. It provides a unique insight into the minds and motives of America's most fervent, and perhaps most dangerous, enemies. Nail-biting action, political intrigue and a powerful love storythey're all here.

Raymond Queneau’s Dubliners

Raymond Queneau’s Dubliners PDF Author: James Patrick Gosling
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527539903
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
This work is a broad-ranging exploration of two comic erotic and well-nigh feminist novels written by Raymond Queneau, On est toujours trop bon avec les femmes (1947) and Journal intime (1950). Both are set in Ireland, were initially published by Éditions du Scorpion under the pseudonym Sally Mara, and then later published together by Gallimard as Les Œuvres completes de Sally Mara (1962). The book examines Queneau’s life when he wrote these texts, the pervasive Joycean influences, his surreal version of the 1916 Dublin Uprising versus the real event, his remarkably accurate Dublin city and his use of the Irish language. The seven core chapters are explorations of prominent aspects of these works, and most involve the solution of puzzles by means of investigations of contexts, contemporary events, and a wide variety of sources. In conclusion, the book makes a convincing case for the literary and entertainment value of Les Œuvres completes de Sally Mara as a long-planned and subtly integrated work.
