Digital Papyrology I

Digital Papyrology I PDF Author: Nicola Reggiani
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110547600
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 391

Book Description
Since the very beginnings of the digital humanities, Papyrology has been in the vanguard of the application of information technologies to its own scientific purposes, for both theoretical and practical reasons (the strong awareness towards the problems of human memory and the material ways of preserving it; the need to work with a multifarious and overwhelming amount of different data). After more than thirty years of development, we have now at our disposal the most advanced tools to make papyrological studies more and more effective, and even to create a new conception of "papyrology" and a new model of "edition" of the ancient documents. At this turining point, it is important to build an epistemological framework including all the different expressions of Digital Papyrology, to trace a historical sketch setting the background of the contemporary tools, and to provide a clear overview of the current theoretical and technological trends, so that all the possibilities currently available can be exploited following uniform pathways. The volume represents an innovative attempt to deal with such topics, usually relegated into very quick and general treatments within journal articles or papyrological handbooks.

Checklist of Editions of Greek, Latin, Demotic, and Coptic Papyri, Ostraca, and Tablets

Checklist of Editions of Greek, Latin, Demotic, and Coptic Papyri, Ostraca, and Tablets PDF Author: John F. Oates
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 140

Book Description
The primary purpose of the Checklist is to provide for scholars and librarians a ready bibliography of all monographic volumes, both current and out-of-print, of Greek, Latin, Demotic, and Coptic texts on papyrus, parchment, ostraca, or wood tablets. A secondary purpose of the original checklist (first published in 1974) was to establish a standard list of abbreviations for editions of Greek texts. Now this has been largely achieved, this edition aims to expand standardized abbreviations to cover Coptic and Demotic material. In general, this volume offers more complete coverage of Demotic material than ever attempted before; it is especially valuable since this is a growing area of study that lacks bibliographic resources and standard notations.

Ranging across a thousand years of history, Gabra's observations will make any reader an expert on the composition and content of some of Egypt's most outstanding religious art and the salient architectural features of each monastery, as well as the ongoing process of restoration that has returned much of their original vibrancy to some of these works."--Jacket.

Christianity

Christianity PDF Author: Ḥabīb Badr
Publisher: World Council of Churches
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 942

Book Description
"It is still generally taken for granted.that the history of Christianity is essentially European history, and that beyond Europe's immediate eastern borders lies a homogeneous Muslim world..Here.in comprehensive and accessible form, is a unique survey of this [Christian Middle Eastern] heritage, written by first-class scholars and by those who best know the Eastern Mediterranean world from within..This is a very significant book indeed for all, Christians or non-Christians, who want a better understanding not only of the Middle East but of the whole of our contemporary cultural and religious scene." - Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury / "Missionary engagement and theological creativity; interaction with other religions, cultures and civilizations and promotion of justice, peace and freedom; diaconal action and martyria in life and in death have marked the long, complex and rich history of Eastern Christendom..This book is a serious and bold attempt to provide a unique perspective on various dimensions and spheres of the churches' life in the Middle East." - Aram I, Catholicos of Cilicia and Moderator of the World Council of Churches / "Authors belonging to various ecclesial traditions trace together the history of Christianity in the Middle East. Their common approach reveals to what extent 'unity in diversity' has been a meaningful gift, as much as it remains a demanding challenge to the historic lands where Christianity first spread." - Walter Cardinal Kasper, President, Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity
