Continuum Thermodynamics

Continuum Thermodynamics PDF Author: Wilmanski
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812835563
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
This book is a unique presentation of thermodynamic methods of construction of continuous models. It is based on a uniform approach following from the entropy inequality and using Lagrange multipliers as auxiliary quantities in its evaluation. It covers a wide range of models — ideal gases, thermoviscoelastic fluids, thermoelastic and thermoviscoelastic solids, plastic polycrystals, miscible and immiscible mixtures, and many others. The structure of phenomenological thermodynamics is justified by a systematic derivation from the Liouville equation, through the BBGKY-hierarchy-derived Boltzmann equation, to an extended thermodynamics. In order to simplify the reading, an extensive introduction to classical continuum mechanics and thermostatics is included. As a complementary volume to Part II, which will contain applications and examples, and to Part III, which will cover numerical methods, only a few simple examples are presented in this first Part. One exception is an extensive example of a linear poroelastic material because it will not appear in future Parts. The book is the first presentation of continuum thermodynamics in which foundations of continuum mechanics, microscopic foundations and transition to extended thermodynamics, applications of extended thermodynamics beyond ideal gases, and thermodynamic foundations of various material theories are exposed in a uniform and rational way. The book may serve both as a support for advanced courses as well as a desk reference.

Advanced Mathematical and Computational Geomechanics

Advanced Mathematical and Computational Geomechanics PDF Author: Dimitrios Kolymbas
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540450793
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
Geomechanics is the mechanics of geomaterials, i.e. soils and rocks, and deals with fascinating problems such as settlements, stability of excavations, tunnels and offshore platforms, landslides, earthquakes and liquefaction. This edited book presents recent mathematical and computational tools and models to describe and simulate such problems in Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. It includes a collection of contributions emanating from the three Euroconferences GeoMath ("Mathematical Methods in Geomechanics") that were held between 2000 and 2002 in Innsbruck/Austria and Horto/Greece.

Fluid Mechanics and Thermo-Acoustic Waves

Fluid Mechanics and Thermo-Acoustic Waves PDF Author: Timothy S. Margulies
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1462802389
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 157

Book Description
A derivation of the averaged balance equations of fluid mechanics is presented including compressibility with alternative equations of state, viscous and thermal dissipation contributions, stream tube end boundary motion, and chemical reaction. Explicit utilization of the energy equation, or enthalpy equation in combination with the linear momentum and mass balances is investigated. Both the vorticity and Bernouilli equations are provided in alternative forms with thermodynamic energy assumptions to be used in engineering analysis and to discern assumptions.

Formulas of Acoustics

Formulas of Acoustics PDF Author: F.P. Mechel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662072963
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1197

Book Description
This application-orientated collection of formulas has been written by applied scientists and industrial engineers for design professionals and students who work in engineering acoustics. It is subdivided into the most important fields of applied acoustics, each dealing with a well-defined type of problem. It provides easy and rapid access to profound and comprehensive information. In order to keep the text as concise as possible, the derivation of a formula is described as briefly as possible and the reader is referred to the original source. Besides the formulas, useful principles and computational procedures are given.
