Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
When Research Matters considers the complex and crucially important relationship between education research and policy. In examining how and under what conditions research affects education policy, the book focuses on a number of critical issues: the history of the federal role in education policy; the evolving nature of educational policy research; the role of research in debates about reading, NCLB, and “out-of-field” teaching; how research affects policy by shaping public opinion, judicial rulings, and the decisions of district and school leaders; and the incentives that help explain the behavior of researchers and policymakers.

Naval Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Operations

Naval Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Operations PDF Author: James J. Wirtz
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134036574
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
This edited volume explores stability, security, transition and reconstruction operations (SSTR), highlighting the challenges and opportunities they create for the US Navy. The book argues that SSTR operations are challenging because they create new missions and basing modes, and signal a return to traditional naval methods of operation. Mission accomplishment requires collaboration with a wide range of actors representing governmental, non-governmental and commercial organizations, which often creates politically and bureaucratically charged issues for those involved. However, although from a traditional warfighting perspective, stability operations might be viewed as having little to do with preparing for high-intensity conventional combat, these kinds of operations in fact correspond to traditional missions related to diplomacy, engagement, maritime domain awareness, piracy and smuggling, and intervention to quell civil disturbances. SSTR operations can be therefore depicted as a return to traditional naval operations, albeit operations that might not be universally welcomed in all quarters.

Severing the Achievement Gap in the Education of Students PDF Author: Art McCoy
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 9780595411498
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
Severing the Achievement Gap in the Education of Students contains powerful learning activities and successful research-based strategies for the classroom, the school, and the district level. This work is one of several learning outcomes of the SAGES Summer Academy 2006. The SAGES Initiative represents everyone and every effort that justly "severs" an achievement gap in student education. The heart of the Academy was empowerment. The SAGES Summer Academy provided students with life-changing experiences through the following five components: university exposure, academic goal setting, student empowerment, mentorship and career exploration, and academic enrichment. The attendees learned about life's journey with the various needs, supporters, hindrances, and greatness; saw their society and themselves. In an attempt to let their light shine in society, they shared perspectives and their hearts, heads, and hands collaborating to achieve our goals. All proceeds from this book will go to the Rockwood VICC Foundation to assist the student SAGES with college scholarships, supplies, and supplemental services as they work to fulfill their path and promise.
