Elisabeth Tonnard
Author:
Publisher: J & L Books
ISBN: 9780989531108
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Elisabeth Tonnard's In This Dark Wood is a study of urban alienation in America. In a haunting, modern-gothic style, it pairs images of people walking alone in nighttime city streets with 90 different English translations, collected by Tonnard, of the famous first lines of Dante's Inferno: "Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita / mi ritrovai per una selva oscura / ché la diritta via era smarrita." ("In the middle of the journey of our life / I found myself in a dark wood / for the straight way was lost"). The images were selected from the Joseph Selle collection at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York, which contains over a million negatives from a company of street photographers who worked in San Francisco from the 1940s to the 70s. This edition is a reprint of a work originally self-published in 2008.

Book Description
At the invitation of Wil van Iersel, twenty-nine international artists each produced a book on a chosen day between June and July 2020. The theme and content of each book was open to each artist; be it a diary, a sketch book, a reflection on these strange times, work made during the lockdown, or a response to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations against police brutality and white privilege. The only condition was for the book to be uploaded to the web on the chosen day. - Website ABC Artists' Books Cooperative.

Book Description
ABCEUM is a multi-volume collaborative project produced by ABC [Artists’ Book Cooperative]. It involves the creation of a museum of books, its corridors, storeroom, toilets, offices, tool cupboard, tea-room, even its car park. Members taking part in the project will take as the title for each bookwork the name of one of the many utilitarian spaces that provide the foundation for the modern museum and interpret the subject in any way he or she sees fit.The form and nature of the finished books or multiples will be left entirely to the artist's discretion; however, all of the completed works will be combined in a cohesive fashion to form ABCEUM itself, through the construction of a suitable container or system of presentation, which will be decided by the members of the cooperative.ABCEUM will be shown at the NY Art Book Fair (end of Sept) and at the Brighton Photo Biennial (2 Oct – 4 Nov).
