Book Description
Excerpt from A Yorkshireman's Trip to the United States and Canada One reason for my appearing in print is, that in my own county of Yorkshire, where I can hope to have the largest proportion of readers, there exists a widespread, but erroneous idea of America, as to its size, its resources, and its capabilities, and though there are thousands of Yorkshire artisans in the States, the information supplied by them to their friends and relatives in the Old Country is generally confined to a description of the features of the immediate locality in which they are living. I have been requested by many friends of those persons who have left the Old Land to seek their fortunes across the water, to give them my impressions of the country, its scenery, and its every day life, and say how their friends are faring in their adopted home. The American and British Debate Over Equality, 1776-1920

The American and British Debate Over Equality, 1776-1920 PDF Author: James L. Huston
Publisher: LSU Press
ISBN: 0807167452
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
The American and British Debate Over Equality, 1776–1920 examines comparisons between American ideals of a classless society and the contrasting British class system, which accepted the existence of inequalities. When the United States declared political independence in 1776, they also announced repudiation of social institutions based on inequality, opting instead for (an ill-defined) equality. British travelers to the United States after 1776 and up to 1920 continuously wrote about how equality was faring in the United States and compared it to the operation of inequality in England, Scotland, and Ireland. They laid bare the actual outcomes of a system of equality versus one of inequality; this was no theoretical, intellectual exercise but instead constituted a recording of actual human practices. By the end of the nineteenth century, the defects of a system of inequality became clear in manners, social interchanges between income classes, general education levels, religious convictions, and the general energy of a people. The exploration of these nineteenth-century comparisons has great relevance for today's persistent debates about social inequities and their solutions.

Now Then Lad...

Now Then Lad... PDF Author: Mike Pannett

ISBN: 184901728X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
A true-life Heartbeat for the twenty-first century. Yorkshireman Mike Pannett has just taken up a new posting as a local bobby in rural North Yorkshire. It's quite a change from the Met, where he dealt with riots on the capital's streets and drug gangs in Battersea, and found out what it was like to stare down the wrong end of a sawn-off shotgun. Now, instead of hunting down knife-wielding muggers, he's chasing runaway bullocks, holding up the Last Night of the Proms traffic to escort a lost mole across the road and combing the countryside for the villains who stole the Colonel's balls. Mike's first year on his new patch is told in seventeen chapters which interweave his escapades on the beat month by month together with his growing knowledge of a landscape that changes with the seasons and some snapshots from his off-duty life. Here is a wonderfully entertaining celebration of North Yorkshire, its breathtaking scenery and wide variety of characters and communities.

Book Description
The train taking nineteen-year-old teacher Christy Huddleston from her home in Asheville, North Carolina, might as well be transporting her to another world. The Smoky Mountain community of Cutter Gap feels suspended in time, trapped by poverty, superstitions, and century-old traditions. But as Christy struggles to find acceptance in her new home, some see her — and her one-room school — as a threat to their way of life. Her faith is challenged and her heart is torn between two strong men with conflicting views about how to care for the families of the Cove. Yearning to make a difference, will Christy’s determination and devotion be enough?
