Book Description
Excerpt from Letters on the Immortality of the Soul: The Intermediate State of the Dead, and a Future Retribution 1 4th, If the soul is not immortal, and does not sufl'er in a disembodied state, it is certain there is a radical mistake in all the missionary projects of the present day. It -is not disputed, that all these projects receive their impetus from the be lief that the soul is immortal, and if not saved, must go into future endless misery at death. Ask any one of those, who rest not day nor night in begging money for missions, what makes him so very zealous - The answer is, 0, to save the immortal souls of the poor, perishing heathen. Who can blame them for their exertions in such a cause, if this doctrine be true? And is it not a disgrace to Universalists, who believe Mr. Hud son's system, not to exert themselves in attempt. Ing to save immortal souls? Indeed, his punish ment, in duration, looks so much like endless punishment, that they ought to be fellow work. Ers with our orthodox brethren in such a good cause. It will afford me sincere pleasure to see them remove such an inconsistency between their faith and practice, and wipe off this reproach. But if the soul/is not immortal, and does not ex ist in a disembodied state, much money, and zeal, and labor are spent to obtain a visionary object. This no man will dispute. All I ask then, is, that my views be candidly investigated, for if true they deeply interest the community. 5th, If the soul is not immortal, and does not suffer in a disembodied state, an end is put to much misery suffered by the human race. If I am correct m my opinions, an end is put to all the terror and misery which ghosts have occa. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Immortality of the Soul and the Final Condition of the Wicked Carefully Considered It was remarked by the learned editor of the Presbyte rian, (the Rev. Dr. Engles, ) in his notice of my work on the Resurrection, that perhaps it was a defect that the author, in treating the subject, was too anxious to demolish every part of the theory of Professor Bush. This may have been so. But though the judicious suggestion has been constantly in mind during the preparation of the present tractate, the appearance of being too particular in meeting the recent assaults on the doctrine of immortality could not' well be avoided. The theme, in its far-reaching relations, to theology, philosophy, tradition, and Scripture exegesis, is most extensive. The writers to whom I reply, moreover, are very numerous, and taken collectively have, in one way or another, traversed the whole field of argu ment, pressing their assaults with great zeal and earnestness, and their writings are widely disseminated both in this country and Great Britain, and have made a deep impres sion on multitudes of minds. Book Description
Excerpt from The Immortality of the Soul: A Protest They are a protest against a doctrine which, during long centuries, has been almost universally accepted as divine truth taught in the Bible, but which seems to me altogether alien to it in both phrase and thought, and derived only from Greek Philosophy. Until recent times, this alien doctrine has been comparatively harmless. But, as I'have here shown, it is now producing most serious results. My protest against it is an appeal, which no Protestant can disallow, from the traditional teaching of the Church to the supreme authority of Holy Scripture. Of the justice of this appeal, my readers must judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
