Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise of the Materia Medica and Therapeutics: Two Volumes in One When we fix our attention upon a diversity of mixed objects, we naturally, andalmost unconscious ly, begin our inquiries by separating them into groups or families, according to their various analo gies or resemblances. We thus obtain a general viewof their common and partial relations; and are thereby better enabled to investigate their individual characters, as well as to retain what We have learned concerning them, by the influence of association. 'we become systematic from the very constitution of the human mind. To classify our ideas is the first step we take towards useful knowledge; and the highest attainments of intellect are but a more ex tensive and intimate view of' the various relations which subsist between the objects of human know ledge. A Text-Book of Materia Medica

A Text-Book of Materia Medica PDF Author: George Frank Butler
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331345568
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 720

Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Materia Medica: Pharmacology and Therapeutics The book is the fruit of some twenty years' experience in teach ing therapeutics and clinical medicine, and many years of private and institutional practice. It has been my effort to embody as much as possible of this experience in a condensed, carefully classified, and usable form. Above everything else, I desire this book to be practical rather than theoretical. It is important not only that the student should acquire the largest amount pos sible of knowledge of the remedies which he expects to use in the practice of medicine, but also that this knowledge should be systematically and logically arranged, so that it may become immediately available. I believe that the classification which I have adopted particularly lends itself to that end, and that it will greatly facilitate the study of this important branch of medicine. While the needs of the student have been kept in the fore ground, I have not forgotten the demands which are made upon it by the practising physician. I have, therefore, endeavored to make the subject-matter as complete and as detailed as the size of such a work will permit, and to give Special prominence to the therapeutic sections. In this field I have drawn largely upon my own experience, not forgetting the larger mine of current medical literature. Healing with Poisons

Healing with Poisons PDF Author: Yan Liu
Publisher: University of Washington Press
ISBN: 0295749016
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
Open access edition: DOI 10.6069/9780295749013 At first glance, medicine and poison might seem to be opposites. But in China’s formative era of pharmacy (200–800 CE), poisons were strategically employed as healing agents to cure everything from abdominal pain to epidemic disease. Healing with Poisons explores the ways physicians, religious figures, court officials, and laypersons used toxic substances to both relieve acute illnesses and enhance life. It illustrates how the Chinese concept of du—a word carrying a core meaning of “potency”—led practitioners to devise a variety of methods to transform dangerous poisons into effective medicines. Recounting scandals and controversies involving poisons from the Era of Division to the Tang, historian Yan Liu considers how the concept of du was central to how the people of medieval China perceived both their bodies and the body politic. He also examines the wide range of toxic minerals, plants, and animal products used in classical Chinese pharmacy, including everything from the herb aconite to the popular recreational drug Five-Stone Powder. By recovering alternative modes of understanding wellness and the body’s interaction with foreign substances, this study cautions against arbitrary classifications and exemplifies the importance of paying attention to the technical, political, and cultural conditions in which substances become truly meaningful. Healing with Poisons is freely available in an open access edition thanks to TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem) and the generous support of the University of Buffalo.

Drug Discovery and Evaluation: Methods in Clinical Pharmacology

Drug Discovery and Evaluation: Methods in Clinical Pharmacology PDF Author: H.Gerhard Vogel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540898905
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 576

Book Description
Drug Discovery and Evaluation has become a more and more difficult, expensive and time-consuming process. The effect of a new compound has to be detected by in vitro and in vivo methods of pharmacology. The activity spectrum and the potency compared to existing drugs have to be determined. As these processes can be divided up stepwise we have designed a book series "Drug Discovery and Evaluation" in the form of a recommendation document. The methods to detect drug targets are described in the first volume of this series "Pharmacological Assays" comprising classical methods as well as new technologies. Before going to man, the most suitable compound has to be selected by pharmacokinetic studies and experiments in toxicology. These preclinical methods are described in the second volume „Safety and Pharmacokinetic Assays". Only then are first studies in human beings allowed. Special rules are established for Phase I studies. Clinical pharmacokinetics are performed in parallel with human studies on tolerability and therapeutic effects. Special studies according to various populations and different therapeutic indications are necessary. These items are covered in the third volume: „Methods in Clinical Pharmacology".
