Book Description
Christian Roberts is a 19-year old art student who is attracted to his 36-year old humanities professor, a statuesque French beauty named Solange Doucette. A chance meeting between the two at school late one night sets them on a trajectory that seals their destiny. After their first night together they realize there is a deep, mystical connection between them that transcends their age difference. After an enlightening sojourn at a Tantric Yoga ashram in India, Solange convinces Christian to move to her family's villa outside Paris. With Christian attending art school in Paris and making a name for himself as a sculptor of functional art, and Solange now expecting their first child, it seems that a happy, fulfilling life is assured for the unlikely couple, despite Solange's nagging fears that life is a tenuous thread. Then, one day, the thread snaps and their idyllic existence is forever upended by a catastrophic event that no one ever saw coming - except, perhaps, Solange, but she was powerless to stop it.

Kin & Kind

Kin & Kind PDF Author: Laura VanArendonk Baugh
Publisher: Laura VanArendonk Baugh
ISBN: 1631650297
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 311

Book Description
After generations of war, the fragile new peace hangs by a thread, as Ryuven attacks continue despite the treaty. Shianan leads an exhausted army facing a fresh and magically superior foe. Worried for Ariana, not yet returned from her own deployment, and as demoralized as his soldiers, Shianan is unprepared in every way when Flamen Ande, high priest of the Gehrn cult, reappears to demand Luca back. Luca was once enslaved to Ande, but that was a lifetime ago, before the fall of the shield, before the battle that nearly killed the prince-heir, before the desperate truce and the unexpected massacre by magics they could not resist. But that was also only months ago, and thanks to Luca's devastating honesty, Ande is newly absolved by the court. Tamaryl has sacrificed too much for this peace, and he will do whatever it takes to preserve it—even bring more Ryuven to fight in Chrenada. When he is given a cruelly impossible choice, he must decide where his faith lies and who can be trusted with the salvation of his people. Ariana has irrevocably committed herself against the king's will, but that may be the least of her troubles as she is targeted by those who would use her for revenge. Between human and Ryuven assailants, she must risk all on a defense no one else can use. Kin & Kind is the final novel in the action-packed Shard of Elan series!

The 'Conspiracy' of Free Trade

The 'Conspiracy' of Free Trade PDF Author: Marc-William Palen
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316477851
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 562

Book Description
Following the Second World War, the United States would become the leading 'neoliberal' proponent of international trade liberalization. Yet for nearly a century before, American foreign trade policy was dominated by extreme economic nationalism. What brought about this pronounced ideological, political, and economic about-face? How did it affect Anglo-American imperialism? What were the repercussions for the global capitalist order? In answering these questions, The 'Conspiracy' of Free Trade offers the first detailed account of the controversial Anglo-American struggle over empire and economic globalization in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. The book reinterprets Anglo-American imperialism through the global interplay between Victorian free-trade cosmopolitanism and economic nationalism, uncovering how imperial expansion and economic integration were mired in political and ideological conflict. Beginning in the 1840s, this conspiratorial struggle over political economy would rip apart the Republican Party, reshape the Democratic Party, and redirect Anglo-American imperial expansion for decades to come.

A Memoir of Love and Madness

A Memoir of Love and Madness PDF Author: Rahla Xenopoulos
Publisher: Penguin Random House South Africa
ISBN: 1770221891
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
In 1992, Rahla Xenopoulos was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Despite the devastating diagnosis, she sought education on her affliction. Although she found an abundance of literature on various mental illnesses, none of it seemed applicable to her. This situation inspired her to write a book chronicling her ongoing efforts to come to terms with a disease that is, in effect, a life sentence. The book recounts her upbringing in an eccentric, loving Jewish family, her struggle with bulimia, anorexia and self-mutilation, her attempts at suicide, finding true love and, finally, the ‘crazy, utterly unpredictable experience of giving birth to triplets’. This is neither a self-help book nor a medical guide. Reading this book will not cure anyone; bipolar disorder is a chronic illness. But it did help Rahla - as it will countless others - ‘to understand the rhythm in the cacophony of this condition’.

The Murmuring Coast

The Murmuring Coast PDF Author: Lídia Jorge
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 9780816621125
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
This captivating tale is told in two parts. The first presents Lidia Jorge's version of a traditional story about a series of supposed incidents set in Beira, Mozambique. The events take place in the final years of Portugal's colonial African wars as an undisclosed narrator describes the military wedding of a young Portuguese ensign and an equally young bride. The wedding is followed by the mass poisoning of hundreds of native Africans and the arrival of a rain of locusts. The story ends grimly with the groom's suicide. Evita Lopo, the unnamed bride from the first part, narrates the remainder of the story. Twenty years have gone by and she reviews the past and questions the unidentified narrator's rendering of events in the first section. Evita's reminiscences destroy the credibility of the earlier story, and she supplies the reader with a great deal of information that the author of the previous account had suppressed or to which he or she merely alluded. It becomes apparent that betrayal and guilt have motivated all of the characters' actions.
